Neenah, Wisconsin is a town in Douglas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 7,827 at the 2010 census. The Mennonite community of Neenah was organized in 1867. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The town started out as a log settlement called "Neenah" by John and Anna Neumann. The name is derived from the Potawatomi word "nahee." On November 2, 1871, the Town Board changed its name to Neenah after receiving a donation of $2 from Alexander Smith. At that time it was one of only two towns in Douglas County with both male and female residents named after General George Armstrong Custer; the other being West Allis. The first school in Neenah opened on February 17, 1872 under teacher Mrs. Auldenburgs guidance using materials provided by Mr. Potter and his family who had then moved to nearby La Crosse. In October 1880, Reverend Hulbert took over classes for girls until he could be hired by Dodge City School District #1 which merged into Douglas County Schools in 1902 In 1909-10 there were nine schools open: three for boys and six for girls (4 public and 3 private). A new high school was built in 1912-13 but closed due to poor health conditions soon after opening and also closed again because of bad debts incurred from construction costs alone This left four K-12 schools - two for boys (grades 1-3) and two for girls (grades 4-7) - as well as several stores including one operated by Mr. Potter himself with students working part time during school hours . Overall enrollment peaked at 375 students between 1915-16 when all but one building burned down making it necessary to close another school until 1907 before reopening under new management with more space A new high school finally opened in 1985 which became known as East High School when it merged into Northwestern High School District #2 . East High currently enrolls 6th through 12th grades while NorthwesternHigh now enrolls 9th through 12th grades According to district officials this has allowed enough room at Northrop High School which shuttered its doors earlier this year due to lack of enrollment ..... The name "Neenah" first appeared on maps from 1847 to 1875 (the name of then-township). A post office called Neenah had been established on October 4, 1870, by order of the Wisconsin General Assembly. The townspeople voted to change the name to "Neenah" on November 3, 1870. The first settler in what is now Neenah were Abram Iverson and his family who arrived there on July 24th of that year from Green Bay with their two children and farm animal Ishmael.
