The United States Naval Reserve has a rich history that goes back to 1847. The Oshkosh Naval Reserve Battalion was activated on July 1, 1847, at the nearby town of Oshkosh by Commodore John P. Richardson, Commandant of the Navy Yard in Philadelphia. At its height, the battalion had a strength of 350 men and patrolled waters off the Great Lakes region. On October 5, 1850, it relocated to Milwaukee and began recruiting sailors for service in China during the Opium War (1856-1858). The battalion was disbanded on December 15th, 1850. The Oshkosh Naval Reserve Battalion was reactivated on January 3rd, 1862 at Superior, Wisconsin as part of the first all-new navy reserve force established by President Abraham Lincoln following the American Civil War. This new naval reserve force consisted of men from civilian life who volunteered to serve in their military grade equivalents in exchange for pay and benefits such as free housing and other privileges enjoyed by regular navy personnel. The battalion served valiantly throughout the war with distinction (including taking part in several engagements off Louisiana) but ultimately succumbed to attrition due to disease and forced marches through enemy territory. The unit was disarmed on May 9th 1865 and its members were transferred back into Regular Navy service pursuant to General Order No. 11 which abolished all volunteer navy forces throughout America except for those providing security for federal buildings during wartime periods. In 1886 Oshkosh established itself as an educational center with its own high school (now known as The University ofWisconsin–OshkOSH) and also opened the doors to Racine College for Women which still operates today as one of three coeducational colleges/universities in Wisconsin operated by private sector entities outside of state government controls (the other two being UW–Madison and Marquette UNIVERSITY). There were also few if any public schools until after World War II when residents forced their local school board to open up after finding that they were not providing an adequate education for their children while spending huge sums of money on sports programs instead During World War II many companies decided that moving production plants from New York City or Pennsylvania would save them millions of dollars so they built plants right here in OshchOSH including Ford Motor Company (1944), Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (1945), Raytheon Missile Systems Incorporated (1948), Hewlett-Packard Co., Ltd.(1949), US Steel Corporation(1950) among others Many small businesses closed down during WWII because there wasn't enough demand for products produced by these large companies but many larger businesses such as GEICO continue to operate today thanks to Oshkoshians who have supported them over the years . In 1957 Oshkosh constructed its first shopping mall - Waukesha Center - which continues to serve as a key shopping destination for locals and tourists alike today . In 1962 Oshkosh became home to Apple Inc.'s headquarters followed by IBM later that yearbefore becoming a part of Intel International Components Group Limited in 1996 .Today much smaller companies such as Michaels Stores Incorporated(owned by Sears Holdings Corporation)and JCPenney have taken over some older buildings while larger stores like Macy's have moved out entirely leaving only two anchor stores - Sears Craftsman(1991)and Kmart(2004)). With current demographics it is likely that more than half of all jobs within Southeastern Wisconsin will be located within 10 miles or lessof an urban area by 2020!
