Platteville is a town in Sawyer County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay–St. Paul metropolitan area. The plat for Platteville was filed on April 12, 1851 and recorded on December 11, 1852. The name of the town is derived from French La Prairie which means "the pastures." Platteville was first established as a farming community by men who had come to this region during the early days of Wisconsin Territory settlement. By 1854, most of the original settlers had departed for other locales in what is now Iowa or Illinois due to harsh winters and low resources in this area. However, two families—the Appelmans and the Blairs—continued to farm in present-day Platteville until 1855 when they sold their land to John Bickerton for $3 per acre. They did not yet have modern surveying equipment which would allow them to create precise plans of their townsites. One such settler was Jeptha Hargrave who moved his family from neighboring Appleton late in 1865 while construction was under way on Waukesha Dam across the river from downtown Platteville; he initial claim ran parallel with current Highway 20 east of town limits but later changed it so that his line extended northwestward along present-day Highway 362 near Interstate 90 exit 124B (now called State Road 765) until it reached Racine Avenue just south ofpresent-day Lake Pointe Park Park Drive/State Road 767A (Lake Pointe Woods Boulevard). The Platteville area was first settled by the Potawatomi in the 17th century. The town of Platteville was founded on a large, flat piece of land that would later become part of the city of Milwaukee. The plat for Platteville was filed in 1824 and named for General James Wilkinson, who led an expedition against the Menominee in 1817. The town gradually grew around its two schools, a Methodist church, and a small log fort built by Captain John Sibley in 1827. By 1840, the population of Platteville had reached 2,500 people. In 1851, President James Buchanan appointed Colonel Isaac Niles to survey and purchase land east of Milwaukee for what would become Green Bay. The town's growth slowed as Factory Village development began to take hold along the Fox River near downtown. However, by 1860, Platteville had reached its peak with 3,000 residents. After years of economic decline due to immigrants coming through Milwaukee and new industrial developments outside of town, the population started to shrink again during World War II as manufacturing switched from paper products to munitions production. In 1949, businessman George Romney decided to move his company from Scranton (PA) to Door County after witnessing rapid growth at home in Wisconsin's agricultural sector. He purchased about 1/4 mile (1 km) north-west of downtown Platteville from local ranchers for $2 per acre (0·85 sq km). Romney renamed his new development "Romney Land" after himself and gave it out free to farmers who committed themselves to growing crops there rather than using it as pasture or other property used by others such as factories or homes.
