Richfield is a town in Door County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 6,865 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from a spelling mistake made by one of its founders when he wrote "Richefeld". The first settler in Richfield was John Richards. He built a log cabin in 1784. In 1838, Abraham Morse moved to Richfield and started a blacksmith shop. In 1858, Ulysses S. Grant came to Richfield and bought land for $1,000. He started an agricultural business and gave away 100 acres (40 hectares) of land to each resident in 1863 as part of his presidential campaign promise. In 1907, the railroad arrived in Richfield and changed the economy of the town slightly. At that time there were only three businesses in town; two stores and one post office. The railroad also brought people into the town; it attracted farmers who grew crops for sale on site or transported them to other towns for processing into food products like flour or sugar cane). By 1925 there were twenty-one businesses in town with a payroll of $14,856 ($113 per capita). After World War II ended, many small businesses closed down because manufacturing had shifted to overseas locations due to wartime production shortages. The town is named for Isaac Richfield, an early settler and banker who helped build up the community and founded its first store in 1836.
