The United States Air Force has a rich history in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. The USAF was founded on March 14, 1947 by President Harry S. Truman with the goal of providing air support for American forces in World War II. Today, the USAF operates more than 600 bases around the world and employs over 148,000 people. Sheboygan also played host to NORAD's easternmost command post during Operation Northwoods in 1962-1964. At that time, NORAD was responsible for monitoring all aspects of interstate travel within U.S., Canada and Mexico as part of Operation Coppermine - a plan hatched by then CIA Director Dulles to create chaos before the Olympics in Rome by creating false intelligence reports indicating Soviet troop movements near Lake Ontario beachhead. A mock war exercise turned into a full-blown conflict when local children playing near the base inadvertently drew attention from nearby airspace controllers who flew exercises above their heads! On November 5, 1992, the squadron was redesignated as the 6th Fighter Squadron (6 FS). The squadron flew F-16 Fighting Falcons from a base at Green Bay Army Museum until it moved to Sheboygan Municipal Airport in May 1996. Inactivated on September 30, 2007 when its mission became solely that of the Wisconsin Air National Guard's 145th Fighter Wing.
