The community was named for General Samuel Superior, who fought against Indian tribes in 1814. When first settled by Europeans in 1783, Superior was located along the banks of what is now known asthe Fox River. In 1814, General Samuel superior fought against Native American tribes and helped to drive them out of this area. Today, Superior retains much of its early history and culture including elements of Dutch Reformed Christianity and Scandinavian culture.
