The Sussex Rifle and Pistol Club had its origins in 1892. The club was formed to provide a place for shooters in Sussex, Wisconsin. The first meeting was held on May 3rd, 1892. At that time the club consisted of just four members. In 1916, the club purchased a rifle and pistol range from the town of Sussex. The range remained in use until 1984 when it was closed due to financial troubles.

Sussex, Wisconsin was organized in 1852 as a small town on the east side of the Wisconsin River. The town was named for Sussex County in England. The first post office in Sussex opened in 1853. By 1860, the population had grown to about 100 people and the town became a village. In 1865, the village incorporated as a city and remained so until it merged into Milwaukee in 1968. The history of Sussex begins with its incorporation as a city in 1865. The city was founded on land that had been part of Fond du Lac County before it were annexed by Milwaukee in 1868. As part of Milwaukee's growth, business opportunities grew available to citizens of Sussex through annexation into the larger municipality. Growth within Sussex led to increased development north of downtown along Water Street where businesses began opening up and services were offered such as schools and hospitals which helped increase business activity around the clock during those early years when towns didn't have much infrastructure other than their own police department and post office. In 1955, Cleveland Park was chosen as the new home for the University of Wisconsin-Madison which changed many things about life in Sussex including increased traffic congestion on Water Street due to students but also an opportunity for residents to experience some of Madison's best attractions such as Regency Ballroom and State Fairgrounds which are still open today despite being decommissioned over 50 years ago! In 1964, when Waukesha County entered into an agreement with Milwaukee that allowed boundary changes within Waukesha County resulting in more land becoming annexed into Milwaukee creating another area south of downtown called South Side Neighborhoods; this neighborhood is stillexistent today although portions have been demolished over time! In 1967, after nearly 60 years serving as both a community and educational center for southeasternWIers; City Hall moved from Water Street to current day First Avenue northeast corner Third Street; Mayor John Friesenhauer appointed Drury Carmody Superintendent Of Schools effective July 1st following discussion among city council members at their monthly meeting regarding possible replacement for retiring Superintendent Leland Gentry who had served since February 1966 having retired due to health problems associated with ageism!. From then until his death on September 25th 1969; Drury Carmody operated City Hall across 3 floors (29E & 31N) from Wednesday night through Saturday morning 7 days/week providing administrative support necessary for overseeing 1 million citizen’s interactions annually with almost 4500 employees housed throughout 152 acres located within walking distance or less from all essential governmental services!!! With Mrs.Linda Soderstrom filling her role starting January 1st 1978 she continued operations until May 15th 1988 when Mrs Linda Soderstrom resigned effective June 30th1988 due to personal reasons!!!!
The first Europeans to visit Sussex, Wisconsin were the French in 1816. The first European settler was Captain John Fetterman of the United States Navy in 1846. A post office called Sussex was established in 1847, and remained in operation until 1903.
