The Wisconsin Air National Guard's 81st Airlift Wing, which is headquartered in Wauwatosa, has deployed multiple times to support Air Force operations throughout the globe. The wing's history dates back to World War II when it was established as the 8th Bombardment Squadron at Mitchell Field, South Dakota. It served in the European Theater of Operations and flew supplies to Allied troops in North Africa and Europe. In 1948, the squadron moved to RAF Lavender Hill, England and became part of the Eighth Bomber Command. During the Korean War, the 81st Airlift Wing transported crews and cargo from Japan to Korea for combat missions. In 1994, after more than 50 years of service within the USAF Reserve Forces system, thewing adopted its current name - The Wisconsin Air National Guard's 81st Airlift Wing - effective May 1st of that year. Today's81st Airlift Wing provideslift support for military installations all over America with a primary focus on Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) in Seattle – home to both Naval Base Kitsap and United States Marine Corps Kaneohe Bay. With more than 170 aircraft parked on property at JBLM alone – including 49 C-5 Galaxy Aircraft – this airbase can house up to 56 aircrews at any given time receiving mission training or deploying nationwide for any type of operation our Armed Forces may need or ask us to perform. Additionally, we continue our tradition of providing Global Reach Services through KC-135 Stratotanker deployments statewide as well as numerous other joint assignments around America .
