Wauwatosa is a town in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 51,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Wauwatosa Metropolitan Statistical Area. Wauwatosa is located on the shores of Lake Michigan and its namesake river, the Wauwatuksa. The first Europeans to visit what is now Wauwatosa were French traders in 1657ading upstream from present-day Milwaukee. In 1836, J.P. Morgan named one of his mills "Wauwatosa" after his home town of Wauconda, Illinois. The name stuck and today it's one of the most commonly used names for local communities in Wisconsin due to its history and association with Morgan's milling enterprise as well as its location on the shoreline of Lake Michigan within easy walking or biking distance of downtown Milwaukee (and its sister city Marquette). In 1844, Wauconda residents organized themselves into a town corporation which began developing businesses along Sapsucker Avenue and State Street northward from their community center eastward to Watertown Landing on Cedar Creek. This early development pattern continued until industrialization destroyed much of this small village during the late19th century; however, some vestige remains can still be seen today including several churches and an opera house built between 1899 and 1901 by noted architect George Miles Jr.. The first post office in what is now Wauwatosa opened in 1846. By 1861, over 50% of all mail received by Madison County was sent through Wauconda then known as "the City".
