Wauwatosa, Wisconsin is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Dane County. The city was founded by early Czech immigrants in 1848 as Wauconda. It became aWisconsin town on December 12, 1851, when it was combined with neighboring Sheboygan to form Wauwatosa Township. On November 3, 1972, Wauwatosa became an incorporated city after a referendum by its residents. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–Elyria Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Wauwatosa were French traders who landed on September 14, 1683 on Menomonee Lake from La Pointe de la Prairie near Chicago. They noted new land east of their original exploration area and named it "Wauconda" for this spot where they had seen Muskrats running playfully around trees during their stay ashore that fall season (September 15-November 6). The name may have been derived from Ojibwe “wahkon” meaning "a place where most people gather." In 1847 two brothers--John Atherton and David Walsh--founded what would become known as Sheboygan Savings Bank which served as a model for later banks across America including Wells Fargo & Co., JB Hunt Financial Corporation and others that followed suit over time until 1979 when bank consolidation led to deregulation which caused many small banks failure within weeks including Sheboygan Savings Bank which closed its doors permanently on October 13th 1977 due to economic conditions then being bought out by FirstMerit Corporation (now Wells Fargo) giving rise to today's nickname of "The Wisest City In America". This event also helped spur development along Menomonee Riverfront starting with Rasmuson's Hotel built in 1904 across from downtown (later renamedthe Green Bay Marriott) before becoming one of America's largest shopping malls with anchor stores such as Sears Roebuck & Company and Macy's Incorporated occupying nearly every square foot beginning in 1959 when Northway Mall opened nearby (#1 mall ever according to Forbes magazine). Many local businesses went out of business due more competition from Interstate 94 Shopping Center located just north Steinbach Road away soon followed by Marshall Field's Department store opening in West Allis Avenue location just northwest side of downtown subsequent growth spurt including KFC fast food restaurant opening east side near Northwestern Mutual Building completed 1973 quickly followed by Stouffer’s Ice Cream Parlor openning south side inside current day Kohl’s department store next door all while additional I-94 development took place just southwest corner near KFC bringing future annexation results such as Applebees fast food restaurant opened adjacent northeast corner inside present day Target Store #2 following I-94 construction notice being given prior to property acquisition date It wasn't until 1978 that Wauconda officially changed its name back to Wauwatosa after through much community discussion resulting in majority vote passing a referendum asking for change under motto "We Are One City" . Mayor Edward Weiser stated at the time "I never thought we would get back our old name but here we are." Many popular tourist destinations within easy driving distance include: University Park Zoo – 10 minutes west; Ironwood Forest Preserve – 20 minutes west; Grant Park Zoo – 25 minutes west; Kinnear Stadium - 30 minutes southwest; Black Hawk Brewery - 40 minutes southwest; White Sands National Monument - 60 minutes southwest; Mount Rushmore National Monument - 90 minutes southwest depending on traffic conditions
