The name "Alabaster" comes from the word "alaband," meaning white marble. The first inhabitants of what is now Alabaster were Native American and European settlers who came to this area during the 1800s. The town was founded by James Witherspoon and others in 1887 as a result of land grants given to them by President Andrew Johnson. At that time, there were only a few hundred people living in what is now Alabaster. In 1903, Alabaster became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and city council. Because it was an incorporated municipality, the town had more control over its own destiny than it would have if it had been a single unincorporated community. Alabaster is a city in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jefferson County and home to General Motors Alabaster plant. The area that would become Alabaster was first settled by the Creek Indians in the late 18th century. A post office called "Alabaster" was established in 1836, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1837, a group of Scottish settlers arrived in what would become Alabaster and began to establish a farmsite hereabouts. By 1840, most of the Scots had departed for other parts of Alabama due to economic hardship caused by the Panic of 1847. In 1845, John Mclntyre purchased 640 acres (2 km²) from David Edmunds as part of an effort to develop land around Muscle Shoals Falls north of Birmingham on the Flint River system. The town site being developed included two square miles (4 km²) of present-day Alabaster on the east side of Muscle Shoals Creek and 160 acres (61 ha) on the west side across from what is now Hoover Dam National Monument. Mclntyre named his new community "Albany" after Albany, New York City; he may have been influenced by reports that Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show was then taking place at nearby Shawnee Mission Park. A post office called "Albany" was established in1836,andremainedinoperationuntilitwas discontinuedin 1907. In 1847,the Scots settlement burned down due to weather conditions; no one was hurt but some goods were lost or destroyed during this event. A second Scottish settlement began upriver near modern Auburn when some farmers discovered coal seams there which led to another name change for this location - "Cumberland."
