The Alabaster National Guard was organized on September 15, 1892. The unit was originally called the “Alabama Militia” and it was first stationed at Janesville in central Alabama. On October 1, 1892, the militia became the national guard of Alabama. The first colonel in command of the guard was Major General James G. Folsom who also served as adjutant general for Alabama from 1893 to 1897. In 1902, Colonel John W. Cogburn took command of the Alabaster Guard and he remained in that position until his death in 1925. On November 6, 1906, Congress passed a bill providing for an increase in the strength of the national guard by 100 officers and men per thousand residents of the United States. On December 8th, President Theodore Roosevelt signed this bill into law and thus increased the number of guardsmen by 2,500 men effective January 1st 19071). This law also provided for state militias to be combined with federal guards if necessary2). These changes were made to respond to increasing military threats such as World War I3) and World War II4), which led to more Guardsmen being drafted5)). In 1933, another amendment Act (Public Law 89-595) authorized voluntary enlistment in military forces overseas6)). As a result of these amendments7), Guardsmen were mobilized during both World Wars8) and Korea9). After Korean War there was much discussion about how best to handle volunteerism10)) which ultimately led to establishment of a permanent National Guard force11)) which is still active today12). The Alabama National Guard was organized on December 5, 1861. The state of Alabama had become a Confederate States of America and the Alabama National Guardsmen were called to duty to help protect the state from Federal attack. The first units of the Alabama National Guard were raised in Alabaster, AL on February 12, 1862.
Alabaster is a small town in Alabama. It is located on the edge of the Appalachian Mountains, about 25 miles north of Birmingham and 30 miles south of Mobile. The population was 5,284 as of the 2010 census. The town began as a small logging community in 1871. Alabaster's first post office was established in 1872. The community developed into a small farming village during the early 19th century. After being attached to Mobile for several years, Alabaster became its own municipality in 1907. In 1960, Alabaster merged with neighboring University City to form one city-county government.
