The Marine Corps has been present in Alexander City, Alabama since the early 1800s. The Marines have played a significant role in the city's history, and their presence continues to this day. First established as part of Mobile Brigade, 1st Battalion (2nd Marines) was activated on December 8, 1886 at Fort McAllister. In 1898, 2nd Battalion was redesignated as 4th Battalion (Marines), and served with distinction during the Spanish-American War. In 1917, 4th Battalion was reactivated as 3rd Raider battalion and fought in World War I. In 1924, 3rd Raider battalion was redesignated as 5th Raider battalion and continued service during World War II. At war's end, 5th Raider battalion was disbanded and its members were assigned to various other unitstips throughout the Marine Corps until they were reestablished in Alexander City under the command of 1st Marine Division on September 15, 1945. As part of Operation Neptune's Spear – which marked Japan's entry into World War II – 5th Raider battalion participated in naval amphibious assaults against Okinawa Island and later supported ground operations against Japanese forces near Tokyo Bay. Since its inception as a unit within 1st Marine Division, 5th Raider battalions have also served aboard amphibious assault ships such as USS Belleau Wood (CG-5), USS San Francisco (LHD-1), USS Tuscaloosa (CLP-3), USS Nassau (AGS-8), USS Wasp (CVN-73). Today’s marines are justly proud of their past - both their professional accomplishments and those that took place while serving our country abroad. Their commitment to duty is unquestioned; every marine takes an oath to support “the Constitution of America” no matter what lay before them overseas or at home. These men and women wear many hats - leader/ soldiers/ sailors/ airmen/ Marines - but each one plays an important role within our military community both here at home and abroad. In addition to their traditional duties ashore or afloat these marines often find themselves performing additional tasks that may not be ordinarily associated with their branch of service but which remain essential for our country’s defense - things like providing humanitarian assistance or disaster relief after earthquakes or hurricanes; assaulting enemy positions from long distances using precision fire from shipboard artillery or aircraft; or participating in ceremonies such as Bastille Day parades or Armed Forces Day observances – all without ever leaving it all behind when called upon to fight again tomorrow!

It is one of several small communities that dot the rural landscape in this region, which has a history dating back to 1819. Today, Alexander City remains a center for retail and service businesses as well as a popular tourist destination thanks to its beautiful architecture and Historic Downtown area. The town began as a farmstead on the east side of Baldwin County. In 1819, General Andrew Jackson ordered Major James Fenton to establish an outpost west of Mobile Bay in what is now Baldwin County. Fenton built a log cabin near present-day Alexander City and named it after himself. The town rapidly grew from its original settlers, who consisted mostly of farmers and their families. By 1830, Alexander City had become an important trading post with connections to both Mobile and Charleston shipyards across Mobile Bay. In 1835, James Kenedy founded what would become Kenedy & Company lumberyard on land adjacent to present-day Alexander City. This company became one of the most influential logging operations in Alabama during the late 1800s and early 1900s due to its ability to supply large quantities of lumber needed for construction projects throughout the state. In addition to providing employment for local residents, Kenedy & Company also helped contribute significant sums towards building downtownAlexanderCity into an important cultural resource today. Alexander City continued growing through World War II until President Harry Truman issued Executive Order 9802 Restricting Commerce with Japan on Dec 15th 1945 establishing Camp Atmore within boundaries established by Executive Order 9808 on Jan 1st 1946 which prohibited any further growth within limits set forth by those orders pending final determination by government authorities respecting sovereignty rights over portions thereof granted under Treaty between United Statesof Americaand Japan On or about Jan 2nd 1946 Camp Atmore was abandoned following surrender by Japanese forces
