In 1847, Alexander City's first policeman was hired. The man was John Pritchard and he served for one year. In 1849, the town appointed a second policeman, James Wiggs. He also served for one year. In 1850, the town appointed a third policeman, Benjamin Fenton. He also served for one year. In 1851, the town appointed a fourth policeman, John Hargrave. He also served for one year. On November 7th of that year, William Linnell became the first white person to be hired as an Alexander City police officer and he serve until 1865 when he resigned due to health problems. In 1861, Abraham Lincoln was elected president of the United States and on December 3rd of that yearAlexander City's first black policeman was born into a family of policemen in the community - Samuel Freeman Jr.. Mr Freeman would later become an assistant chief of police in Montgomery County Alabama from 1967-1984 and then again from 2001-2002 until his death on October 21st of that year at age 87 years old having retired after almost seventy years service with the department

Alexander City is an unincorporated community in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. It is located on the east side of Alexander City Creek, about a mile southeast of the county seat of Marshall. The community was named for General Alexander McGillivray, a hero of the Mexican-American War and later a U.S. Congressman from Alabama. The first settler in Alexander City was James Aiken, who arrived in 1839. AfterAiken died in 1841, his widow Phebe moved to town with her four children and started a small grocery store. The settlement grew rapidly around this time and by 1860 had more than 20 residents. By 1870 it had developed into a sizable town with a post office, schoolhouse, Masonic lodge (now closed), churches (two Baptist and one Methodist), two hotels/motels, and several stores. In 1881 Alexander Citybecame the county seat ofMarshall County when that county was created from parts of Baldwin and Stroud counties; it remained so until 1907 when Mobile becamethe county seat again after being designated as the new capital of Alabama due to its location on Montgomery's newly established map of state boundaries. During Reconstruction Alexander City experienced some strife between white supremacists and black separatists; however most disputes ended up resolved peacefully without any major incidents or violence. Some local businesses such as JW TV continued to operate while others such as Armour & Co., Wagon Wheel Inn & Tavern, Post Office Store No 1&2and Southern Hotel were either destroyed or converted into livery stables during this time period. However much later when Marietta began expanding northward beyond the original limits granted by Congress in 1865 there became little need forAlexander City because Marietta had become an increasingly large city with multiple schools, hospitals, churches etc.; moreover it lay within easy commuting distance both eastward along I-565 towards Birmingham proper and westward across I-10 towards Lexingtonville/Ft Worth TX). Nevertheless although no longer used for agricultural purposes or served as a bedroom community for Marshall County residents many homes still remain standing today within what is now known as the "Old Town" area including Maxwell Place School which dates back to before 1901 when Drs Gentry & Garland operated it; Mrs DeLaughter's House which houses Historic photo album related to early pioneering days at present dayAlexanderCity aforesaid also remains standing tall today just off Oldtown Road just south Of Courthouse Square
