Atmore is a town in Yellowhammer County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,746 at the 2010 census. Atmore is located on the Mobile River and is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. It is also served by the Atmore Independent School District. The first people to live in what is now Atmore were hunters and gatherers who hunted big game such as deer and bear. By 1800, white settlers had arrived in what is now Atmore and began cultivating land. They built log homes which still stand today. In 1868, residents of nearby Coweta voted to form their own school district which would eventually become Atmore ISD. In 1925, a new dam was completed upstream from where present-day Atmore stands making it possible for more water to be brought into town; this led to an increase in development around the dam site including a shopping center and several small businesses. In 1978, following passage of the state Constitution amendment giving voting rights to citizens over age 25 years old, Asbury Park (the former hometown of then-Governor George Wallace) became the new seat of government for Yellowhammer County effective January 1st that year. This event made Atmore one of two towns in Alabama with full voting rights under Constitution Amendment No. 2 (the other being Vestavia Hills). Accordingly, growth around the dam site continued unabated until 1984 when construction began on a brand new $6 million courthouse/town hall complex adjacent to downtown; this project was ultimately finished in 1995 after many months of construction budget overruns resulting in much destruction along with some lost jobs and savings for locals alike within the process! Although not without its controversy due to its unsightly appearance – most notably among those living near or adjacent to downtown – overall completion marked an important milestone for both downtown business owners and local residents alike who continue To this day enjoy easy access any time they want or need it! Atmore is a town in the U.S. state of Alabama, located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains about 30 miles (48 km) north of Birmingham and 50 miles (80 km) south of Mobile. Atmore was founded in 1868 by settlers from Georgia, who named it for their nearby community of Allatoona Hills. The first post office was established in 1870, and Atmore became a full-time incorporated city on November 1, 1887. The population was 9,935 at the 2010 census. The town's ZIP code is 35007. Atmore's history goes back to 1868 when settlers from Georgia arrived in what is now Atmore with the goal of establishing themselves as a rural farming community on the edge of what would become Birmingham County. For many years, Atmore was an agricultural center characterized by its large cotton plantations and small crossroads where farmers bought goods and sold services to one another. In 1907, Mayor Waddell Gillem spearheaded efforts to build a new municipal building that would serve as both home court for local basketball teams and city hall throughout the nation’s capital during World War I while also serving as a model for future municipally funded buildings such as City Hall Park in Baltimore. The $5 million dollar project took more than 10 years to complete; however, when finished it provided an important step forward for downtown development which began shortly thereafter In 1933 Atmore’s first professional football team played their games at Legion Field against fellow Alabama towns Tiger Stadium (now Bryant-Denny Stadium), Sewanee (now Neyland Stadium), and Auburn University before moving into Their permanent home at Legion Field later that year where they remain to this day . In 1941 Legion Field hosted “Abe Lincoln”s final campaign rally before he became President . After World War II ended, demand for football games decreased but interest revived when LegionField served as an event arena until it closed in 1968 after hosting over 100 events including Super Bowl XIV
Atmore is a small town in Montgomery County, Alabama, United States. Atmore was founded on March 3, 1836 by John and Anna Atmore as the village of Atmore Station. The name was changed to Atmore on December 15, 1881. The post office at Atmore was first established on May 14, 1837. The first store in the community was built by James Gorman and opened in 1840. In 1865, the Fuller family moved from Mobile to establish their farming empire at Atmore Station; they were the first white family to reside there. The population of Atmore peaked at 553 in 1920 but declined thereafter due to loss of jobsoutside of agriculture and industry throughout the Twentieth century combined with rural flight; however it reached an all-time high of 1,848 in 2000 before declining again during the Great Recession. In recent years there has been hope for revival with investment from businesses like Google Fiber which promises reduced costs associated with living near major cities while also creating new opportunities for job creation within the local economy through its deployments around town; however much work still needs to be done including mayor’s efforts towards infrastructure development as well as improving education and public transportation access
