When the United States acquired its independence from Great Britain, a new government was needed and a new military was needed. The first military unit in Atmore was called the First Alabama Regiment of Infantry. The regiment was formed on November 3, 1818, and served in the War of 1812. The regiment lost 11 officers and 114 enlisted men during that war. On July 4, 1830, the Second Alabama Regiment of Infantry was organized at Atmore and served in the Mexican-American War. That regiment lost 5 officers and 101 enlisted men during that conflict. On October 9, 1840, the Third Alabama Regiment of Infantry was organized at Atmore and served in the American Civil War. That regiment lost 5 officers and 130 enlisted men during that conflict. In 1865, Atmore became an independent town under Confederate rule after Northern forces burned down many of their homes as part of their “ April Fool’s Day” campaign against Confederate General Robert E Lee. After Confederate defeat at Appomattox Court House in May 1865, much of Atmore reverted to Union control including its military units which were redesignated as divisions within regular army formations known as brigades (and finally divisions within armies). In 1970s there were some efforts by local groups to re-establish military ties with Atmore dating back to World War II when some donations came from Asa Hutchinson who had been mayor at that time; however these relationships cooled off over time due largely to differences over funding for programs such as Veterans Affairs or historical research projects concerning those wars (Atmore has never participated militarily in any conflicts). Today there is no active duty military presence within town limits but certain functions are carried out through volunteer fire departments or service clubs affiliated with county or state troops stationed nearby such as Fort Benning Army Base or Whiteman Air Force Base just outside town limits on Blackwell County Road 727 east of Main Street; while Ft Walton Beach is also adjacent on State Road 401 northbound about 8 miles east of town limits
