The community was founded in 1881 by a group of Methodist missionaries who traveled down the Mobile River valley to look for a location for their new mission station. The town grew rapidly as people started moving into the area to live and work in the mining industry that was developing near Center Point. A post office was established at Center Point in 1883, and by 1907 it had become an important transportation hub for miners travelling up and down the Mobile River valley. In 1940 CentrePoint became one of several towns within 20 miles of Birmingham, Alabama which were merged into what became known as "Birmingham-Tuscaloosa-Centerpoint". This merger allowed for more widespread economic development within CenterPoint as businesses were brought closer together with access to highways. In addition, centerpoint began experiencing some growth due to its proximity to Tuscaloosa University which opened its doors in 1965. Since then, business has continued to grow within centerpoint with many new industries starting up such as health care and technology companies. Today, CentrePoint continues to be an important community with many residents involved in various aspects of local economy including commerce, government service, education, research organizations and more. Center Point is a small town in Colbert County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,746 at the 2010 census. The center of town is located on FM 1421, about two miles northeast of the county seat. Center Point was founded by settlers from Mobile and other nearby towns in 1901. The first post office in Center Point was established in 1892; it closed in 1903. The first store opened in 1902. In 1913, the town became a school district and had its first election that year. It also acquired its current name from the point of view at which it sat on several springs called "Centre" or "Citizen's Well". In 1924, Center Point formed a cooperative water system with nearby Blackwell and Greeneville to provide better water service to surrounding communities. That same year saw the opening of the first grocery store in Centre Point and until 1966, all three stores were owned by one company: Humble Grocery Company Incorporated (later renamed JCPenney Companies). In 1976, First National Bank moved into downtown Center Point from its original location on Court Street just east of Main Street after purchasing what was then JCPenney's largest share of the business including most of the buildings proximate to Main Street between Third Avenue and Court Avenue near Interstate 20/U.S.– Mexico border crossings (the old First National Bank building still stands as an office tower). In 1984-1985, when CentrePoint began having problems with lead poisoning from drinking water from three wells within some hundred yards of their downtown business district - leading to health concerns for many residents - local leaders led a campaign to have bottled water delivered directly to homes without having to go through CenterPoint's main address where people could potentially contaminate their drinking water even more easily if they did not properly clean up after themselves - ultimately resulting in installation of new city-wide lead filters which have eliminated any potentialLead contamination since those days! On January 15th 2009 Centrepoint celebrated 175 years as a community!
