Center Point is a city in Cullman County, Alabama, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 31,906. The city was founded by white settlers in 1869 as Centreville. Center Point is located on the Tennessee River and is bordered by the towns of Florence to the east, Sheffield to the north, and McCoy to the west. The first European settlers arrived at Center Point in 1869 after purchasing land from Native American leaders. The town was named for General Andrew J. Johnston's headquarters in Virginia during the Mexican–American War. The citizens of Center Point voted to rename themselves "Cullman" on January 8, 1870, following their victory over a Confederate force at an engagement known as Battle of Center Point Creek. In 1872, center point became one of four cities (the others were Florence, Sheffield and McCoy) that formed Cullman County when it was created from parts of Greene County and Wilcox County. In 1896, center point became an incorporated city with a population exceeding 50 thousand people after annexation by Florence; however, this occurred only after years of negotiation between both cities and county officials over how best to serve both communities simultaneously. In 2001 Cullman City Stadiums Authority merged with Birmingham-Southern College which resulted in a loss or potential loss for $27 million dollars annually that would have been used to finance operations within Cullman City Schools District #2 which included principal & assistant principals salaries along with other services such as transportation/parking/maintenance/purchasing supplies needed for students including textbooks and Supplies for Science classes were among these items that would have gone up in smoke if not taken care of immediately according as soon as possible because they are essential functions within our education system without them we could see major problems down the road .
