The first roasters in Decatur were two men named W. H. Bowers and S. E. Smith, who started selling coffee from their home on Depot Street. In 1934, the first grocery store in town opened and began selling coffee by the barrel (4 pounds). By 1945, there were sixteen roasters in Decatur with seventy-five barrels of beans per day being sold. In 1951, the first drive-through Starbucks opened in town and continues to serve today!

Decatur was founded in 1821 as the first town in Alabama. It is located on the Flint River, about 25 miles northwest of Birmingham. The community grew rapidly due to its location and its access to transportation, including a ferry that connected Decatur with Mobile and Pensacola. The town's growth was halted by the Panic of 1837, which caused a severe financial crisis. However, Decatur bounced back and became one of the most important seaports in Alabama during the 1830s and 1840s because of its position on the river. In 1851, Decatur became part of the newly formed Confederate States of America and refused to ratify a Union compromise that authorized slavery within Confederate states. This led to the Battle of Fort Donelson, which ended Confederate control over Alabama. In 1865, Decatur was renamed Montgomery after General Robert E. Lee's headquarters were moved from Richmond to Montgomery County in Virginia. The population reached 100,000 by 1870 but declined shortly thereafter due to several factors including American Civil War involvement and migration to other areas in Alabama. By 1930, only 10 percent of Decatur's population remained living within its boundaries.
