The Alabama National Guard was created on July 1, 1892, as a result of the amendment to the Alabama Constitution that granted statehood to Alabama. The guard originally consisted of only infantry and artillery units. In 1907, the Guard was divided into two sections: the First Regiment Infantry and the Second Regiment Infantry. On October 1, 1912, both sections were combined into one regiment under the command of Lieutenant Colonel John W. Mellen. The regiment was redesignated as brigade on May 1, 1915. On February 14, 1923, Brigade Mellen was renamed Divisional Army Corps in response to a request from then-Governor George Wallace for national Guardsmen to serve in his administration as part of his program to build a strong Republican Party during the 1924 session of Congress which would lead up to Wallace's gubernatorial campaign against James Moseley in 1928. In 1944 Governor Don Boren authorized Major General Albert Custer with orders to raise armored divisions within State Defense Headquarters at Montgomery so that they could participate in Operation Tennessee Bottom if necessary due to World War II threats from Japan. To this end Brigadier General Arthur Hager activated Company A (1st Battalion) 19th Armored Infantry Regiment from National Guard Armory at Decatur on December 4th 1944 and Company B (2nd Battalion) 20th Armored Infantry Regiment from Redstone Arsenal on December 5th 1944
Decatur, Alabama is a town in and the county seat of Decatur County, Alabama. The population was 31,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. The first permanent white settlers in what is now Decatur County were those who came from Georgia in 1814 to purchase land around Mobile Bay. They named their new community after General Andrew Jackson's home state, Tennessee. In 1840, they founded the town of Muscle Shoals on the Chattahoochee River near present-day Decatur. The first post office in Decatur was established in 1851. The current post office building was built in 1907 and renovated in 2006-2007 by local architect Lloyd Wright Jr., one of only two buildings designed by him outside his main interests as an architect—the other being the original Waco Texas State Capitol building completed in 1936. In 1912, Millard Fillmore became governor of America and issued a proclamation calling for all citizens to JOIN THE REVOLUTIONARY ERA "BY HELPING TO MAKE DECATUR COUNTY A MEMBER OF THE UNITED STATES." This led to heavy investment by many southern farmers into small businesses throughout Alabama during World War I; these businesses helped make Decatur one of the most industrialized areas of the South during that time period. After World War I there was a large boom in agriculture due to increased Demand from Europe for food products brought back by American soldiers; this growth led to high levels of joblessness and poverty among African Americans living east of Montgomery until about 1950 when they started moving westward into rural areas across central Alabama following mass migration from black south Side Chicago neighborhoods during the early postwar years known as "The Great Migration." also during this time many Japanese immigrants began coming through Mobile because they had connections with family members living there (many did not have US citizenship) so they could get work permits and access Social Security benefits under United States law which then allowed them residency status and eligibility for government assistance including housing and education opportunities which eventually led to their integration into society as full citizens

Polk, who had served as its first mayor. In 1865 it became the capital of Alabama after Montgomery was destroyed in a Union attack; it remained so until 1901. The growth of Birmingham (to the northeast) and other cities led to significant road construction through what is now Decatur, including U.S Route 431 and Alabama State Route 231A which provide access to both cities from central Mobile County. The downtown area has been greatly renovated since the early 21st century as part of efforts by Mayor Randall Woodfin and Decatur North Local Development Corporation (LDC) to attract businesses and create jobs within walking or biking distance of all residents, regardless of income level or race/ethnicity
Decatur, Alabama was founded on December 12, 1819 by General James H. Wilkinson and his men. The town was named for Decatur County in Georgia. Wilkinson had been appointed by President James K. Polk to lead the military expedition that burned the Seminole village of Micanopy in Florida on September 29, 1818. The town was built near Fort Brooke on the Alabama River and became a center for trade with outposts along the river. In 1830, Decatur became a state capital and began growing as a transportation center linking central Alabama with its southern neighbour Mobile. During Reconstruction following the American Civil War, Decatur developed into one of the most prosperous cities in Alabama.
