Decatur, Alabama is a city in central Alabama and the county seat of Decatur County. The population was 31,872 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Montgomery County, Ala., which is also its easternmost county. The first European settlers in Decatur were members of the United States Army Corps of Engineers who arrived during the Reconstruction Era following the American Civil War. The city was founded on November 4, 1871 by citizens of Mobile and Baldwin counties as a town named for General David Brown's victory over Confederate forces at Battle Creek on October 16 that year. On January 1, 1875, it became an incorporated municipality with a population of 15,000 people. The original downtown district now includes several blocks adjacent to Decatur Mall and five blocks east of Interstate 10 between 21st Street and 24th Street. These districts are known collectively as "Oldtown." Oldtown experienced rapid growth after annexation by Decatur in 1907; by 1910 there were more than 30 businesses operating within two miles (3 km) of downtown including six banks and fourteen grocery stores. In 1915 an oil well was drilled just east of downtown and production began early that year; this led to increased traffic congestion around DowntownDecatur which helped spur development further eastward into what is now MidtownDecatur where many new restaurants opened up during that decade such as Eddie Bauer Outlet store (now Macy's), JCPenney, Starbucks Coffee & Tea Company (now Dunkin' Donuts), Sears Roebuck & Co., Belk Department Store (now anchor tenant Lionsgate), Ford dealership and other major retailers during what has come to be called "the decadelong period" for DowntownDecatur from 1911-2005 when intra-city automobile travel declined relative to interstate travel The decline began somewhat earlier with prohibition beginning on December 3rd,- 1919 however interurban buses continued operations until 1955 due to municipal ownership/management See: History Of Decatur By Year
