Fairhope is a town in low-lying Mobile County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,992 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville–Decatur metropolitan area. In 1830 Fairhope had a population of just over twenty. By 1860 it had grown to more than three hundred people and by 1930 it reached four thousand. The cotton industry played an important role in its development; Fairhope became known as "the Cotton Capital of the South". The first white settler in what is now Fairhope was James Hogg who arrived on July 4, 1819 with his family from Scotland. He named his new land "Hogtown" after his brother-in-law's farm where he grew up oncrops of corn and hogs. A post office called Hogtown was established in 1827, but no mail ever arrived there due to lack of transportation or infrastructure. In 1830, when Mobile County was created out of Mobile District (itself formed from parts of Baldwin and Stroud counties), Fairhope had a population of just over twenty people living in six small log cabins along the Cahaba River near present day downtown Fairhope. By 1860 it hadgrown to more than three hundred people and by 1930 it reached four thousand people residing primarily within what is now eastern Mobile County proper although some also lived in western Baldwin and southern Montgomery counties as well as east-central Walker County (now part of Monroe). The cotton industry played an important role in early Fair Hope's development; prior to 1850 there were only 10 slaveholders among its then 1,500 residents while by 1870 there were over 200 slaves working on plantations throughoutMobile County employing thousands more local citizens including many women who labored for their masters during the antebellum period carrying goods such as flour downriver on mules or wagons to market. Plantations closed beginning around 1800 due largely to economic factors such as increased competition from West Indian sugar cane growers which began producing large volumes at much lower prices than American producers could match; however slave labor continued play an important role untilwell into the nineteenth century providing key support for rural families through crop cultivation, laundry work, animal husbandry and manufacturing."

Today, Fairhope is a sleepy community with only a few hundred residents living on Main Street. One of Fairhope's most significant moments came in 1892 when it became the first county seat of Jones County after being moved from Montgomery County. At that time, Jones County had just been created following Reconstruction following the U.S. Civil War. For many years, Montgomery County remained the traditional seat of government for Jones County because Montgomery had more voters and resources than any other county in Alabama. On July 3, 1836, the Alabama Territory was organized. The territory was named for General James K. Polk, who had served as United States ambassador to Mexico City during the Mexican-American War. On October 1, 1836, the territory was divided into two parts: a western portion and an eastern portion. The western part of the territory would be known as Fairhope and the eastern portion would be called Birmingham.
