Fairhope, Alabama is a town located in the U.S. state of Alabama. As of the 2010 census, its population was 8,898. It is the county seat for Marshall County. Fairhope was founded in 1856 and named after Captain Fairchild who fought on the Union side during the American Civil War. In 1819, Fairhope became a town and was chosen as the site for Alabama's capital city by Governor John Fenton. The decision was based on its location at one end of Mobile Bay and its importance as a commercial center for trade with all parts of South America. Today,Fairhope is one of largest cities in Alabama and features many important institutions, including The University of Alabama at Birmingham and Southern Methodist University.
