In 1848, the Alabama Legislature created a new county within Coffee County called Lowndes County and Fairhope became its capital. The city continued to grow until it reached its current size in 1960. during that time,Fairhope had over 100 businesses and 400 residents.
Fairhope was founded in 1819 as a trading post on the Alabama River. The town grew rapidly and by 1834, it had become an independent city. In 1865, Fairhope became the capital of the new Confederate States of America. The city suffered severely during the American Civil War, but largely escaped damage. After the war, Fairhope again grew rapidly and by 1887 it had become a major city with a population of over 100,000 people. In 1938, Fairhope was renamed Birmingham after its then-Mayor George Wallace.
