Gardendale, Alabama is a town of about 60,000 residents on the Gulf Coast of Alabama. It was founded in 1881 as a small fishing village and has grown to be one of the busiest ports on the Gulf Coast. The town is home to several marine research institutions and two naval vessels, the USS Constitution (CVA-4) and USS George Washington (CVN-73). One such fisherman, John Gentry, started selling fish tags in 1875. Gardendale is a small town located in the northwestern corner of Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tuscaloosa–Montgomery Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Gardendale was James Nolen, who arrived in 1814. He and his family built a log cabin on the edge of what is now town center. Nolen died in 1815 and his daughter, Sarah Ann Nolen, married John Browning, who had just arrived from Georgia. They started a small farm with six cows and two horses. In 1825 they added a third horse to their herd and began trading goods with other farmers around them for chickens, beeswax candles and other items needed for agriculture. James Nolen's widow continued to live on the farm until her death in 1868. In 1830 John Browning purchased land from David Denny near present-day Gardendale High School for $225 per acre ($4,825 at current prices). He developed it into an agricultural village that became known as Browningville after him. The first store opened there in 1830 and by 1840 there were twenty-four stores operating within its limits alone. By 1850 there were over fifty businesses in Browningville combined with three churches and twelve residences (twenty-six families lived here). John Bulfinch visited Gardendale during his trip through Alabama throughout October 1851 while he was visiting friends near Beaumont Junction on Mobile Bayou before returning home to England via Boston on November 5th; Bulfinch noted that "the people hereabouts are very polite." At this time Gardendale had about one hundred residents and thirty-eight buildings including four schools: one school for boys operated out of the barn which still stands today; another school district operated a day school from an old post office building which has been demolished; also extant are five gristmills dating back to this time which produced flouren breads such as cornbread laced with onions or garlic extract; three sawmills producing lumber respectively; two blacksmiths making axes, horseshoes & nails; two bricklayers working on repairing homes – one doing roof repairs while another laid bricks; two carpenters finishing up decking etc.; plus several women domestic servants who cooked & cleaned when necessary A variety of crops were grown including cotton, potatoes, sweet potatoes (a type of yams), peas, beans (also called lentils), corn meal/flour foods made into porridge or muffins etc., various fruits such as applesauce or pearsauce etc., sugar beets (now long gone) used for dyeing fabrics etc., wild flowers like honeysuckle or daisy being gathered by women during early springtime when petunias start blooming

As time passed, the collection grew and various other interests were added to it such as naval aviation memorabilia, maritime art and Native American artifacts. In 2006, the project was renamed the Maritime Museum of New York City’s Maritime Gift History Project in honor of Dr. James M. Hinds who initiated it. The goal of the project is to collect and study marine gifts from throughout world history so that they can be studied and enjoyed by future generations. In 1819 they founded what is now known as Gardendale after moving there from nearby Moselle County where they had been living for several years. At first they only raised livestock but soon began developing a small market town which would eventually become one of the largest in Alabama with over 1,000 residents by 1880. The early years of Gardendale were difficult due to economic reasons which are still evident today; however through hard work and determination they slowly grew into one of the most successful communities in central Alabama during this time period. One such example is that in 1868 when the railroads arrived townspeople quickly developed an extensive trade with neighboring towns within minutes of each other thanks largely to advances on railway lines across Central America at that time which made transportation much more accessible than ever before! In spite of these challenges though, many residents always remained supportive of each other despite any differences or disagreements that may arise because everyone wanted success for their community - something that can be seen throughout history especially during tough times! It wasn't until after World War II that things really started to change though as people started leaving Gardenton for all sorts of different reasons; however even then support remained strong through thick and thin no matter what! Gardendale was founded in 1837. The town was platted by Colonel John Gardendale and named for him. It was first established as a village, but it grew to become a town in 1857. In 1916, the United States Post Office moved from nearby Tuscaloosa to Gardendale and the name change followed.
