On October 1st 1911 while World War I was ongoing in Europe local men from Gardendale volunteered to serve their country and enlisted in Company C (1st Battalion) United States Infantry at Camp Shelby near Birmingham. They were mustered out on September 30th 1918 and returned home just in time for World War II! AfterWWII ended there wasn't as much need for Army Reserve troops so many soldiers served through Vietnam with no return trip home until after Katrina hit!
