Gulf Shores, Alabama is home to the United States Army Garrison Command Post (USAGCP) and the Headquarters and Headquarters Company of the Alabama National Guard. The USAGCP was established in 1957 as a result of thesharing of resources between the Federal government and the state governments in Alabama. At its peak, there were over 62,000 soldiers stationed at Gulf Shores. The USAGCP is responsible for defense of vital installations within Gulf Shores including Fort Hood, Camp Butler and Camp Shelby. The Garrison also provides support to state-based military forces throughoutAlabama. During World War II, Gulf Shores was a major base for the Japanese military during their occupation of Southeast Asia. After World War II, many Japanese troops were discharged from the military and moved to Gulf Shores seeking new opportunities. A landing party from Fort Gaines on Mobile Bay led by Captain John Rodgers discovered oil wells near present day Gulf Shores on October 14th, 1821 while exploring for Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee during the American Civil War. The first set of wells were drilled using slave labor with over 100 slaves working at one site until 1865 when they were replaced by white workers due to Union pressure; however black workers still continued working in various capacities until after World War II when most Negro laborers were re-hired because their former employers could not find new jobs elsewhere after being discharged from military service during that war as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal program which aimed to stimulate economic recovery in America following its Great Depression years. Gulf Shores started out as a small agricultural community with only a few hundred residents; However, it soon became an important transportation center for commerce betweenMobile Bay and Tuscaloosa City along route 9W (now I-10). In 1922 beachcombing enthusiast Harry Waddell discovered some large blocks of salt he believed could be mined for cashmere yarn which led to development around Waddell's Bluff where today there are several stores including Gassy Grains & More (formerly known as Aloha Woolen Mills), Jiffy Lube hardware store, ExxonMobil gas station/warehouse complex(still standing) and several residences including Humble Homes which was built in 1926 by local developer Royal Hobart who also founded The Birmingham News Syndicate Company Co., now known as Alabama Media Group Incorporated In 1954 Gulfshores was incorporated as a municipality; At that time it had a population of just over 200 residents with many businesses located inside city limits such as Piggly Wiggly hamburger restaurant opened in 1951 by Mrsgrace Sayers who also operated services such as laundry and real estate before selling it in 1978 In 1961 Hurricane Betsy destroyed much of downtown Chattanooga killing more than 50 people plus dozens more injured or trapped within infrastructure damage caused by storm surge combined with collapsed buildings resulting from flooding throughout much of downtown causing widespread loss including massive demolition efforts carried out primarily by ConocoPhillips who used bulldozers clearing acres inland into fields prior to filling them up with sandbags hoping thereby creating an artificial island capable of housing future commercial activities / reconstruction effort followed shortly thereafter During this same period here locally operated radio stations WCJB (AM) - now owned by Cumulus Broadcasting Corporation - KHOU (FM) - now owneried by Scout Radio Holdings Incorporated all playing classic rock music before becoming automated circa 1970s Due largely To aggressive marketing campaigns By Mobil Oil Corp.(owner Of Mobile Service Station across street from old school bus stop which served locals fuel trucking customers) Local businesses began lining up outside giant service station lot across street from old high school building serving local populace until finally closed down about 1990s Today GulfShore features mainly retirees living locally associated with fishing/boating clubs/diving/swimming etc.; With tourism industry having increased significantly recently especially given global economic recession As mentioned earlier there are numerous tourist attractions located nearby within minutes walking distance such as USS Constitution Museum (shown on map below), Marine Corps Base Camp Butler(shown above), USS Porter Museum(shown above), Baldwin State Park Preserve(shown below), Selma State Historic Site(shown below)), Battle Ground National Battlefield Area[1], White Sands Missile Range[2],Historic District OF Auburn[3]and Blue Ridge Parkway[4]. Gulf Shores is a town located in Gulf County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,922 at the 2010 census. It became a city in 2007. The first people to live in Gulf Shores were the Mencys and their descendants who started farming there in the early 1800s. By 1885, the Mency family had built a steamboat landing on Bayou Teche which they used to bring goods from Mobile downriver to their plantation near present day Biloxi. In 1892 the Menczys sold their farm and moved to New Orleans where they died out some years later. In 1915 two men named John Hargrave and W.C. Cook founded what would become known as Gulf Shores Manufacturing Company which manufactured electrical appliances such as radios and televisions for local homes and businesses. The company prospered until it went bankrupt in 1966 due to low demand for its products after passage of the Fair Deal legislation that opened up America's markets to imported goods. The townsite of Gulf Shores was platted by Jno Matson on November 3, 1903 according to deeds filed with the Alabama Territorial Legislature that same year (dated October 9, 1903). Matson purchased land from Ector Ainsworth for $1 per acre which he donated back then (present-day Old Spanish Fort). He named his town after his native shore of Cornwall England where he grew up playing cricket and shooting arrows before coming south for college at Vanderbilt University in 1881-82 (then an agricultural school). When Matson arrived at Gulf Shores he found only three other settlers living on what would become Bayou Teche - one man working on a lease from Ector Ainsworth, one man driving a buggy through town during summertime, and one woman gathering salt water lilies near present day US Route 99W while her husband dug ditches around home (the women are still alive today). Matson erected a wooden frame building known as "The Gullah Cabin" soon after arriving here on October 9th 1903 which served as both his home base and business office until 1947 when he replaced it with his own brick structure that still stands today - now called "The Commodore". During World War II most of what we know about our current downtown area came about when General Motors Corporation leased part of Bayou Teche waterfront property just north of Main Street for use as their plants manufacturing parts for military vehicles such as tanks and aircraft during World War II...the plant closed after the war but left behind large stockpiles of supplies that allowed redevelopment into today's downtown area including The Commodore Hotel & Conference Center/Gulfshores Convention Center circa 1991-1993; Grady Hall State Park around 1935-1936; Asphalt Plant built circa 1951; Exxon gas station built 1954-1958; First Baptist Church built 1958; Stonington Middle School built 1961; Third Coast Bank Building constructed 1962-1964...all thisocumented evidence suggests that much later than 1991 or even 1954 when all these buildings were put together it had already been developed into an urban center complete with shopping malls/restaurants/bars/spa properties etc., something quite unique within early 21st centuryAlabama
