In the late 1800s, Gulf Shores was a small fishing town in Alabama. It was home to several marine stores and bait shops. The local fishermen used to bring their catch back to Gulf Shores for sale to the locals and tourists. The first marine store in Gulf Shores opened up in 1892. These stores sold various supplies for fishermen, such as anchors, lines, trawls, and jigs. Some of these stores continued to operate until the early 1920s. During World War I, many naval vessels were stationed at Gulf Shores including USS Quincy (BB-24) and USS Birmingham (CVA-12). This made it possible for the local fisherman to sell their products directly to these warships. After the war ended, many sailors returning from overseas started bringing back equipment and supplies for local businesses such as Marine General Store. At this time, Marine General Store was one of the largestmarine retailers in America. In 1925, they moved their business into their current location on Bay Street in Gulf Shores. They continue operating here today as a retail store selling both fishery supplies and maritime memorabilia

Gulf Shores grew slowly until it became a community of over 10,000 people by 1970. The original name for the town was "New Port Royal." In 1971, the name change to Gulf Shores to honor General John C. McClellan's victory at Bull Run Creek Bridge over Bull Run River on July 20th, 1861.
