The history of maga coffee can be traced back to the time when coffee beans were grown in Ethiopia. The first mention of maga coffee was made by Ibn Battuta, who traveled to Africa in the 12th century and wrote about a drink he called “Maga”. This beverage was said to be a blend of Arabica and Robusta beans, and it was considered an excellent southern European bean because of its flavor and richness. In the 16th century, Ethiopian traders began traveling to Britain and Europe, where they brought with them some of the first moka coffees. These beans were grown in areas such as Java and India, and they were enjoyed for their unique flavor profile. Over time, various different methods of roasting Egyptian coffee became popular in Europe, such as French press or Dutch oven roasting. In 1844, Italian explorer Luigi Cavallo discovered wild beans growing on Mount Kenya, and he soon realized that these beans had unique properties that could not be reproduced elsewhere. He named this new variety “Maga” after his Ethiopian navigator friend Mohammed Omayyad al-Maghribi (1492-1571). The popularity of maga coffee soon spread throughout Africa, Asia Minor, and Latin America. In 1851, Count Johann Strauss von Kesselring introduced this type of coffee into Germany during World War I – it quickly became one of Germany’s most popular exports. During World War II – which saw many countries lose their Coffee Exports –maga coffee was rationed due to its importance in Nazi propaganda. However, today there is renewed interest in this type of coffee because it has a unique flavor that is difficult to imitate anywhere else!
