Mountain Brook was founded in 1819 by James Black and his wife, Sally. The community was located on the upper reaches of Mobile River, about a mile east of the present-day city ofMobile. Mountain Brook's early residents were primarily farmers and mechanics. By 1830, the population had increased to around 100 people. The first store opened in Mountain Brook in 1845. The community continued to grow until it reached its peak in the mid-1860s with a population of around 1,500 people. However, during the Civil War, Mountain Brook quickly became one of Mobile's most devastated neighborhoods due to its close proximity to Union General Ulysses S. Grant's headquarters at Fort Brooke. In 1865, after Union troops burned down all but one block of Mountain Brook, Residents voted to end their village's existence and relocate elsewhere. Most households left within a year or two; only a few remain today as descendants of those who lived there beforemobility made life much harder for them.
