Pelham, Alabama is a small town located in Jefferson County, Alabama. The population of the town was 2,507 at the 2010 census. Pelham is known for its beautiful white churches and rolling hills. The town was founded by General John Pelham during the antebellum period. The first post office in Pelham was established on October 15, 1819. The current post office building was built in 1924 and has since been used as a courthouse. Pelham is also home to Springhill Baptist Church which is one of the largest Protestant churches in Alabama. Springhill Baptist Church has been serving the community since 1884. During World War II, many residents of Pelham served in the military or were drafted into service. Some notable citizens of Pelham include generals Robert E Lee and Nathan Bedford Forrest Jr., as well as Admiral Harry S Truman and Congressman Ike Saraganese. Pelham is a small town in Alabama, United States. It is the seat of Madison County. The population was 7,569 at the 2010 census. Pelham was chartered in 1892 as a town on the Mobile River, and it became an incorporated city in 1959. It is located on the east side of what is now downtown Pelham. The first permanent settler in what would become Pelham was John Slaughter who arrived in 1796 with his family from upstate New York. Slaughter farmed and raised livestock until 1824, when he sold his land to David McGregor for $4 per acre (1/4 mile). McGregor built a house near present-day Main Street and named it “Pelham” after his ancestor, Philip Noel Pelham from Suffolk England who had settled there about 1785. In 1827, David Cranch bought all of McFarlane’s land which included parts of what would later become PelHAM In 1898, James Biddle donated 160 acres (6 km2) of upland along Mobile Bayou to be used as a center for education and research for Southern Baptist colleges then being established in that area; this donation forms the basis for much of today's downtown Rowlett Park & Research Scarborough Campus development around it. Biddle also donated 20 acres (10 km2) to be developed into a park within walking distance of his home – this parcel would eventually form parts of downtown Rowlett Park & Research Scarborough Campus development around it – making him oneof the " founding fathers" of modern day PelHAM . In 1902–1903, A&M Agricultural Experiment Station Director John Fetterlin conducted experiments at nearby Hanceville Plantation which led toAlabama becoming one of the first states to experiment with cotton gin technology On July 1st 1907 Charles Jett purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) comprising most or all of what now makes up present day downtown Rowlett Park from Andrew Rockefeller – significance given that early commercial real estate developments took place primarily on creekfronts across Mobile Bayou . He founded Jett Land Company which developed muchofthe land that later became Downtown Rowlett Park & Research Scarborough Campus development around it including helping to create many local businesses including Denny's Restaurant where current Mayor humanoid Wendy Orman works today
Pelham was established in 1818 as a slave town near Mobile, Alabama. It became an important cotton plantation center and was the site of several significant events in Pelham's history. The first black person to be born in Pelham was Elijah Davenport, who was born in 1819. The town also played an important role during the Reconstruction period following the American Civil War. In 1865, Pelham residents voted to secede from the Confederacy and become part of the United States. The town continued to grow after its secession and reached its peak population size by 1870. However, it declined subsequent to economic factors and eventually disappeared from history until re-establishment of racial segregation in Alabama in 1980s caused a resurgence of interest in Pelham story.
