After the war, he became an investor in cotton plantations in nearby Mobile Bayou region until his death in 1868. In 1865, a group of men led by Drury Crain founded The Methodist Episcopal Church (now First Baptist) southeast of Pell City on what is now Fourth Avenue NE. They named their new church "Pell City" after General Pell's plantation near Mobile Bayou where they were living at the time. Over time, various other churches were founded including; First Presbyterian (1901), Second Presbyterian (1902), Third Presbyterian (1903), Fourth Presbyterian (1905) and Fifth Lutheran Churches which merged into First Parish Lutheran Church in 1958 A post office called Pell City had been established at this location by December 1st, 1872 under act of Congress known as "An Act to Encourage Commerce." On July 6th 1898 it was renamed Lowndesboro due to increase mail volume from there over Lowndesboro Springs being used for that purpose only adjacent to that community In 1901 a railroad station was built northeast of downtown PellCity by the Gulf Railroad Company; it served as one stop for travelers coming through Lowndesboro downstream from Birmingham until its closure in 1971 . Amtrak operated passenger trains from union Station north to Selma before ending operations south of Montgomery . Passenger service resumed at Union Station south of Selma when US Highway 463 rerouted there following improvements made by then Governor George Wallace On October 1st 1913 local election officials certified results showing James Hinton unopposed as Mayoralty candidate over incumbent Wm Laidlaw who had run unsuccessfully two years earlier In 1916 James Hinton ran for reelection but lost handily against Laidlaw again In 1924 local election Hinton won reelection unopposed once more over incumbent J P Saunders
