The history of coffee in Pell City, Alabama begins with the early days of the town. In 1892, a man named Goldsborough bought a farm near Pell City and began to grow coffee. The first beans were ground for planting in 1915 and by 1928, Goldsborough had sold his coffee business to a Mr. Kappeler. Pell City's first Italian-owned grocery store opened in 1925 and served as a shopstop for customers travelling through the area on their way to Seeley's Ford or Gadsden Mills. Coffee was not only enjoyed by locals but also tourists visiting Pell City during the late 1800s and early 1900s. A group of men from Chicago purchased an old millinery shop at 4th Street and Main in 1919 and started producing roasted coffeebeans for local consumption. By 1922, they had added espresso machines to their operation and became known as "The Coffee Mill Gang." They continued production until 1977 when the mill burned down. During World War II, many businesses closed due to rationing of foodstuffs; however, one business that refused to close was The Coffee Shop on 5th Avenue which continued serving its delicious cups of java even after the war ended. In 1951, The Coffee Shop moved from its original location on Main Street into what is now called "The Hub" - a historic brick building located within walking distance of all aspects of downtown Pell City - making it one of the longest-standing businesses in town today. In recent years, there has been an increase in popularity for roasting our own beans (rather than buying them pre-roasted) as well as sourcing whole bean coffees from local farmers whenever possible. Pell City is a small town in Montgomery County, Alabama, United States. The population of the town was 9,671 as of the 2010 census. Pell City is located at (33.960976, -87.855912). It is part of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Pell City was Isaac Beall who arrived in 1836 and platted what would become Pell City on land that he bought from the Choctaw Nation. Beall named his community after John Fenton Pell, a lawyer and judge who had served as commissioner on Indian Affairs under President James K. Polk during the American Civil War. Pell City's growth began modestly until World War II when its population soared to over 20,000 due to wartime demand for military personnel and businesses within the defense industry. After the war ended, however, Pell City's population plummeted as many residents left for other cities because of high cost of living and scarce job opportunities in Alabama post-war America. Pell City has been inhabited by humans since prehistory and was known as "The Land of Oz." The town was founded in 1875 by John D. Rockefeller and his son Frederick W. Rockefeller, Jr.. In 1907, Pell City was named after Andrew Mellon and other industrialists who donated money to found the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa. Pell City's economy depends on its two sister towns, Decatur and Irondale, which are also located in Huntsville County. In recent years, Pell City has experienced some growth due to its location within easy commuting distance of major metropolitan areas such as Birmingham and Tuscaloosa. As a result, there has been an increase in jobs available for residents including many high-paying positions in engineering and technology companies. This growth has also led to increased prices for food and gasoline due to increased demand from commuters living outside of Pell City or those who commute through other nearby cities such as Decatur or Irondale.
