The history of the Naval Aviation Force in Pell City, Alabama dates back to World War II. The city was founded by General Nathan Bedford Forrest in 1885 as a military base for Confederate forces during the American Civil War. After the war, Forrest developed the town into a tourist destination and named it after himself, Admiral David Farragut. In 1946, Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act which authorized naval aviation activity in Alabama. The first squadron of Navy jets arrived at Pell City on October 3, 1946. The city became home to Naval Air Station Mobile (NASM) and its accompanying radar station in 1951. NASM played an important role in developing America's air defense system during the Cold War years. In 1963, NASM became Naval Air Station Pensacola (NAVPO). NAVPO oversaw all aspects of naval aviation within Alaska and Hawaii before assuming jurisdiction over Pensacola Bayou on October 1, 1971. On July 15, 1978, NASM converted to jet operations with Republic F-4 Phantom IIs and McDonnell Douglas A-6 Intruders from NASM's Boeing 737 Stratojet squadrons; aircraft equipped with Sparrowhawk missiles were also transferred to NAVPO from USAF detachments at MacDill AFB and Eglin AFB concurrent with this conversion. In 1991 Gulf War I veteran Captain Johnnie Walker Jr., commandeered a Lockheed C-130 Hercules troop transport chartered by Colonel James Cameron for his own corporate propaganda venture - "Ender's Game". Captain Walker flew his modified Hercules into Kuwait airspace under false pretenses as part of Operation Desert Storm - thus becoming one of only two U.S military personnel ever honored with an individual Citation for conspicuous Gallantry while serving in uniform outside the United States After 9/11/2001 USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 64) deployed alongside USS Enterprise (CVN 65) off Yokosuka Japan as partShips providing Carrier Strike Group 2 along side JSDF ships escorting Task Force 138 when those ships were ambushed by Somali pirates
