Prattville is a small town located in Montgomery County, Alabama, United States. The population was 3,848 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. Prattville was founded in 1871 by James Pratt and his wife Esther. The original home of the Pratt family was a log cabin near what is now downtown Prattville. The family moved to their current home in 1901. The Pratt family has been active in local civic affairs for many years, serving on various boards and commissions including those responsible for developing the city's downtown area and its landmark courthouse/gazebo. They also donated land for the city's first public park which opened in 1912. James Pratt died in 1951 and his wife Esther continued to live until her death in 1984. Their son John Ewart Pratt succeeded them as president of the community hall organization which he had started with his father before him. Mrs Esther's nephew, Donatella Jaffe Taylor, became Mrs Pratts' successor as chairwoman of that organization after Mrs Taylor's death in 2018 In 2019, it was announced that headmaster at Hoover High School Dr Douglas Ferguson would be retiring after 36 years of service

In recent years, Prattville has seen growth due to its location as a bedroom community for Huntsville and Decatur County residents. In addition to its role as a bedroom community for residents of both cities, PrattVILLE also offers several amenities that are not available in other parts of Huntsville or Decatur County: access to parks and playgrounds; easy access to shopping malls; good schools; restaurants and pubs; and easy access to transportation options such as buses and trains. In fact, many people consider PrattVILLE one of the most attractive places in Alabama because it has all the amenities that are available but are not typically found elsewhere within the larger city limits of Huntsville or Decatur County
Prattville was founded by Levi Pratt in 1825. In 1828, the town became a county seat and it has been held since then. The first courthouse in Prattville was built in 1851.
