Over time, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf grew into one of the most influential artisan coffee businesses in America. There is a long and rich coffee history that starts with the Arabs who first brought beans to Europe in the 8th century. Coffee was already known in India, where it was used for religious ceremonies and as a drink for medicinal purposes. The Dutch started importing coffee from Africa in 1624 and soon spread the flavor all over Europe. The English also began drinking coffee, but it wasn’t until after World War II that espresso became popularized in North America.
Anglo-American settlement in Anchorage began in 1867 with the purchase of a tract of land from the local Native American tribe. The town was founded on April 14, 1875, by Rear Admiral George Dewey and Captain John A. Macdonald as Fort Seward on the east coast of Unalaska Island. The first post office was established at Fort Seward on July 1, 1876, and the first store opened in 1880. The early years of Anchorage were difficult due to lack of access to water and transportation. However, through hard work and determination, the city grew quickly into one of Alaska’s most important commercial and industrial centers during the late 1800s and early 1900s. In 1915, after World War I ended, Alaska became an independent state; however, annexation by Russia did not occur until 1959. As a result of this history, Anchorage has had a unique relationship with both its Russian and American counterparts throughout its history. Due to its location within a heavily commercialized region which experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century (due in part to treasure hunting opportunities), Anchorage is often considered to be among the most highly developed cities in North America today. This prosperity has led to increased development around downtown area; including projects such as Fourth Street Business District that have helped make Anchorage one of the fastest-growing major metropolitan areas in North America. Additionally, tourism has become an important factor inaperating Anchorage; resulting in increased business activity alongaternational streets adjacent to downtown while also creating new opportunities for cultural exploration outside of traditional tourist destinations such as Fairbanks or Juneau.
The first permanent European settler in Anchorage was Nicholas Aspinall, who arrived in 1795. He and his wife, Mary, founded the town of Fort Ross on Kodiak Island after finding a land grant from King George II. In 1821, Aspinall and his family were killed by natives in an incident known as the Battle of Fort Ross. The event is generally considered to be the beginning of Alaska's Native American population. In 1867, gold was discovered at Nome and development began immediately. By 1889, over 1,000 people had relocated to Anchorage from all over the United States for the opportunity to make a fortune mining gold near the new city. The frenzy that followed led to many buildings being erected in what is now downtown Anchorage - some of which still stand today including City Hall and the Alaska State Capitol. Newspapers such as "Alaska" were published in downtown Anchorage during this time and contributed greatly to Anchorage's growth and development as a commercial center for northeastern Alaska. During World War II, many residents took up arms against Japan until they were finally forced out by military forces. The city continued to grow during this time with industries such as seafood processing becoming dominant until the early 1960s when oil production became more important. After years of decline throughout the late 1970s through into the 1990s%, Downtown Anchorage experienced a resurgence starting in the 2000s that has seen it become one of Alaska's most vibrant cities once again
