The Alaska Air National Guard's 159th Airlift Wing (159 AW) is the only airlift squadron in the United States. It was activated on 1 May 1947 as a unit of the Air Defense Command. The wing commenced operations from Fairbanks Municipal Airport, where it had been assigned to 92nd Bomb Wing, First Air Force. The 158 AW was redesignated 159 AW on 10 April 1949 and activated at Ketchikan Naval Base as a fighter-bomber squadron with F4U Corsairs. In 1952, the 158 AW flew its first deployment to Japan with Republic F-102 Delta Dagger bombers. In 1958, the 158AW became an operational support squadron and flew Boeing KC-135 Stratotankers for both Aerospace Defense Command (ADC) and Strategic Air Command (SAC). From 1969 until 1992, when it converted to excess military personnel status, the 158AW operated Lockheed L-1011 TriStar aircraft for Alaska ANG units worldwide. On 15 October 1990, after more than fifty years of service in Fairbanks Municipal Airport, the 159 AW moved from municipal airspace to 96th Operations Range Complex at Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage following successful completion of taxi tests there that same day. A total of nineteen days later on 17 October 1990, activation ceremonies were held at Elmendorf AFB as part of a weeklong celebration celebrating USAF permanently reassigning all subordinate commands within ADC responsible for providing airlift services throughout Alaska including Fairbanks Municipal Airport; this action followed reestablishment of ADC headquarters in Anchorage and new command structure which included Headquarters TacticalAir Command - Alaskan Area (HQTAC-A) which concurrently assumed control of all elements associated with ARDC/Alaska ANG flying squadrons; HQ AAC also assumed control over all elements associated with HQ 169th Airlift Wing operating from Elmendorf AFB thru 16 November 1990 when that unit was transferred direct from Army Forces Europe - Mediterranean Theater The 159th Airlift Wing has been involved in every major event during its history including Operation Neptune's Spear against Yugoslavia during World War II; Operation Desert Storm Against Iraq during Gulf War I; Hurricane Katrina relief efforts following Hurricane Rita; Christmas season 2009 opening gifts to troops stationed overseas at Travis AB CA; eruption Kosrae on 4 July 2009 During WWII: The 158 AW flew Dakota transports supporting RAF Bomber Command’s offensive campaign against Yugoslavia Fifty nine Dakotas were lost while based at Elmendorf AFB Aftermath: Many families never got their chance to meet their loved ones who died in WWII due to lack of access or other reasons

In 1974, air force personnel located at Kodiak Island were given their own airport specifically designed for them! This airport later became known as Kodiak AFB and continues today as one of America's busiest airports serving both local residents and visitors from all over North American!
Fairbanks, Alaska is a town in the U.S. state of Alaska and the capital of Fairbanks County. The population was 9,848 at the 2010 census[1]. The name "Fargo" is derived from a combination of two Alaskan words - fargin (a type of wild game) and loggin (to build). The first people to live in what is now Fairbanks were Athabascans who settled there around 2,000 BC. They hunted caribou and other animals that grazed on their hunting grounds. The first European to visit what is now Fairbanks was Captain James Cook in 1775 while exploringaska Peninsula He sighted natives living around an ice floe near present-day downtown Fairbanks and took some photography before sailing back home with his crew. In 1867, gold was discovered at nearby Anaconda Creek which led to many early settlers moving to the area including John Goodyear who founded Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company in 1899. In 1907, Russian Americans began settling in the area after they were denied entry into United States due to their ethnicity during World War I. Many Russian immigrants went on to become key figures in both local business and civic life hereabouts. One notable example is Igor Strelkovsky who served as Mayor of Fairbanks from 1969 until his death in 1995; he was also one of only four citizens ever elected from outside Russia as mayor of any city or town within the United States (the others being Boris Yeltsin, Vancouver's Jack Layton and London's Ken Livingstone).
