The National Guard of the United States of America was organized on June 1, 1907, in Anchorage, Alaska. The organization grew out of the need for an army that could be called to help protect the city during the September Crisis of 1907. On December 12, 1911, the National Guard was made a state agency with its own budget and authority. The first National Guard unit to serve in Alaska was Company K2 of the 9th Infantry Regiment stationed at Fort Matanuska. On November 16, 1942, when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, all American military forces were called up into service and mobilized along with Japanese nationals living in Alaskan territory. The main task of these troops was guarding Japanese nationals living in Alaska while they awaited orders from Tokyo to fight against America. The guardsmen numbered over 100,000 people and served throughout World War II as part of various combat units including both Army and Navy units. After the war ended there were many questions about how those troops had been used and what had been done with their equipment and supplies. In 1973-1974 there was a reorganization within the National Guard which created three regional commands: Western District (Arizona), Southern District (Alabama), and Eastern District (New York). These divisions were disbanded after a year when it became clear that national guard brigades would not be needed any longer due to increased troop levels within each state constitutional defense force. In 1978-1979 a new organizational chart was created which combined all three regional commands under one command designated as “National Guardsmen State Command” located in Anchorage only until 1983 when it moved to Moscow AFB where it remains today as part of Department OF Defense component known as United States Military Forces Russia

In 1861, when the United States seceded from the Union, many states formed their own militias and the 3rd Regiment became the 2nd New York Militia Association. In 1881, with passage of the National Defense Act, all state militias were merged into one national guard regiment under federal command. Today, there are more than 550 battalions and brigades within the National Guard system. The units come in all shapes and sizes- from small towns to large metropolitan areas. They arebattle ready and can be called upon to support Federal agencies or local law enforcement activities anywhere in America. The history of gifts to national guard units is a rich one that dates back to at least 1792 when New York City offered its 3rd Regiment of Militia (later renamed 2nd New York Militia Association) a gift of pistols and horses for use while on duty guarding American borders against French incursions. From then until 1861, when Congress passed legislation authorizing state militias to become federally-sponsored military organizations, gifts were sporadic at best; most often money was given out as thank yous for services rendered or simply presented as an act of kindnesses to friends and family members who had enlisted in the military or served in wartime conditions overseas. However, with passage of legislation authorizing such gifts following World War I (i.e., after President Woodrow Wilson issued an Executive Order providing for it), things changed rapidly – Gifts began pouring in from all over America! Soon enough, every state within our country had its own militia detachment comprising both Regular Army/National Guardsmen and volunteer “Young Americans” recruited through programs like Soldier's Home which facilitated enlistment by young men betweenthe ages 18-25 years old who could not find employment opportunities because they were too young or disqualified by law from service due to disabilities such as mental illness or epilepsy (see article "National Guard Gift History" below). As time progressed gift giving also grew more formalized with holidays being celebrated specifically around occasions such as birthday parties or other special events where party favors would likely be desired like Commander's Awards (allocated annually to top enlisted members during specific campaigns) etcetera etcetera… Many families would celebrate these important anniversaries together by gifting their respective militiamen items like hatschet sets/knives/ammunition awards etcetera etcetera….. So much so that eventually annual conferences were established where families could meet face-to-face and exchange ideas on how best to commemorate their loved ones' milestones within our country's military structure…. The order also erected a federal courthouse at Fourth Avenue N.(now Constitution Avenue N.), which remains its main landmark today. In 1901, Congress passed legislation creating Yukon Territory adjacent to present-dayJuneau Borough on the mainland side of Cook Inlet - making it possible for people living along Cook Inlet's eastern shoreline (including those who lived within present-day April Harbor) to bypass city limits without having their property confiscated or sold off like so many others during Gold Rush times. That same year saw construction begin on Elliott Bay Bridge over Cook Inlet linking Jacksonville Beach with townsite across from Point Unalaska National Historic Site near Endeavour Island - marking a turning point in human history when goods could be transported cross Cook Inlet easily instead of having them hauled overland through treacherous water routes or downriverpushes like earlier attempts had done
