Apache Junction is a town in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 5,754 at the 2010 census. It lies on the eastern edge of the Phoenix metropolitan area and forms part of the Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale, AZ Metropolitan Statistical Area. Apache Junction was founded in 1885 by A.P. Hance as a dude ranch and cattle station on what is now called "Hance's Hill". The first post office was established in 1886; it operated under the name Apache Junction for one year before being renamed Apache City. In 1907, Pioneer Savings & Loan built a wooden building at what is now Main Street and Juanita Avenue to serve as a branch of its bank. In 1911, Harry Laughlin opened his Laughlin Steel company at what is now Mesa Boulevard and First Street NW; he became sole proprietor and later donated land for annexation into Apache Junction. In 1922, Don Hutcheson established his grocery store at what is now Seventh Avenue SW and Indian School Road NW; he also served as president of the Pinal County Chamber of Commerce from 1923 to 1925. In 1940, USAAF Station 341 (later Davis-Monthan AFB) was constructed adjacent to Apache Junction Airport; it served as an Army Air Forces training base untilactivated in 1948. During World War II, Joint Task Force Two used Apache Junction Airport for bombing raids against Japan's Tojo airfields; these raids resulted in injuries to over 100 people and damage to more than 200 buildings including many homes which were never rebuilt due to lack of insurance money after the war ended. The post office closed December 3rd 1951 but continued operations through January 2nd 1952 when new postal service facilities were built south of town near Scottsdale Municipal Airport (). The Apache Junction site is located in Apache County, Arizona and was first occupied by the Hohokam people in the early 1800s. TheDescription of Apache Junction was published in 1881 by J.D. Neal and it described a small town founded on the San Pedro River by Juan Francisco de Porras and his brother Miguel de la Cueva. In 1906, when the Verde Valley Railroad arrived at Apache Junction, the community quickly prospered as an agricultural center supplying Tucson with goods. However, during World War II, Prescott Army Air Field was established nearby and many residents were forced to flee their homes for fear of being drafted into the war effort. After the war ended, many new residents moved into Apache Junction, but some old-timers continue to live there today. Apache Junction had a population of about 350 people in 1907 when it was first settled according to ranchers ranching operations near present-day Scottsdale and Phoenix. With increasing trade along what is now Interstate 8 (I-8), cattle drives became necessary to bring all this product back east across country; thus, land west of Anthony Street became essential for Rancho Mogollon cattle Growers Association businesses such as Ajo Market & Mercantile Co., Post Office & Telephone Co., Cattle Feed Store #2 (now Mesa Safeway) and also several hotels like Hotel Imperial and Hotel Gila Vieja which stillexist today [1]. The area around present day Apache Junction began to be developed after 1912 when developers started buying up large tracts of land east of Anthony Street for housing purposes [2]. One such developer was Edward Laughlin who purchased 640 acres adjacent to present day Apache Junction from José María Morelos [3]. Laughlin built a number of houses on his property before selling it to Harry Chandler in 1927. At that time, Phoenix'seast side consisted mostly of open desert with few hills or trees; whereas development southward had increased with more housing developments built on streetcar lines served by streetcars called "Rancho Drive" areas such as Camelback Road/Route 66/Pinal Freeway . By 1930s most eastern side development had stopped due various factors including overgrazing which caused grasshoppers to enter crops resulting in less production; while southern side development continued until annexation by Scottsdale following Proposition 120 campaign led by then-Governor Don Whitehurst in 1965 [4] . However, much has changed since then thanks largely to recent growth withinPhoenix metropolitan area: Rancho Mogollon is now home to more than 10 thousand people while Cochise Park provides over 20 thousand jobs along I-8 between Phoenix and Tucson; Muslims have also begun moving into Arizona beginning around 2005 after scores were killed at two mosques hereabouts [] .
