Apache Junction is a town in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. Apache Junction is located on U.S. Route 66 about 12 miles east of downtown Phoenix and 11 miles west of Tucson. The junction of Route 66 and Interstate 10 was first settled by Mormon pioneers in 1847 as they traveled from Utah to find new land that would become Arizona Territory. In 1868, the USGS measured the location and found it to be an ideal place for a transportation hub connecting Tucson with Prescott and eventually Salt Lake City. The town was named after General John Avila Custer's battle against Native Americans at nearby Philbrook Hill in 1864 while he was commanding the Eighth Cavalry Regiment under General Lew Wallace. In 1896, Apache Junction became home to one of the largest cattle drives in history when 120 thousand head of beef were shipped overland from Sherman Oaks, California to sell near Globe Drive in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. The drive ended within three months due to weather conditions and high costs associated with shipping goods overland during those times. A post office called Apache Junction was established in 1907, but it closed six years later because of lack of customers or mail service from Phoenixville-based Colorado River Mail Co.. In 1911, the town incorporated as a village under the name Apache Junction Village Incorporated Company Limited Partnership with a population of fifty residents centered around danceshall The Pioneer Inn on Main Street which still stands today serving food until late into the night (except Christmas Day). The following year saw construction begin on what would become known as Apache Mesa Dam which ultimately provided irrigation water for much of central Pima County including Apache Junction Village and portions of South Willow Canyon Estates south of I-10 between 1988-2001; this project also created many jobs across numerous industries such as manufacturing/agriculture/mining etc.; however since its inception there have been very few developments taking place at this corner location along US 66 particularly given that Water Resources Department regulations now prevent any more dams being constructed anywhere within ten feet OF underground water supplies without prior written consent from both local landowners AND state bureaucrats! This blatant disregard for our duly elected officials & their constituents has resulted in some pretty heated discussions back & forth between locals (& AZ State troopers) about potential next steps... something tells me we won't be getting much sleep anytime soon!
