Buckeye, Arizona is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona. The population was 551 at the 2010 census. Buckeye was founded in 1868 by John A. Buckeye and his wife Anna L. Buckeye. It is named after a large oak tree near the town's center which used to be the main attraction for visitors during wintertime. The first store in Buckeye opened on Main Street in 1876. In 1905, the school district moved from Tucson to Buckeye and built a new school on South Main Street. The original school building still stands today, and it is currently used as office space for the town hall and other governmental entities of Buckeye. In 1907, an irrigation canal was constructed through Buckeye and agricultural products began to be grown there commercially. Today, many businesses are located around the downtown area of Buckeye including several banks with storefronts that date back to before World War II when local merchants invested money into these businesses in order to grow crops seasonally while avoiding competition from outside sources. During World War II, much of what is now downtown Tucson was destroyed by bombing raids; however, many buildings still stand including the old post office which has been preserved as part of Museum Park since its closure in 1945-46 because it met fire codes then (they were stricter than they are today).
