Buckeye is a small town in Arizona, located on the banks of the Gila River. It was founded in 1869 by John Wesley Powell, who named it for the Buckeye tree that grew near his family's rancho. The town has grown steadily since its establishment, and now has a population of around 100 residents. The first settlers in Buckeye were Mormon pioneers who fled Utah during the California Gold Rush. They arrived in 1868 and built their own cabin on a bluff overlooking the river. From here, they surveyed and mapped what would become Buckeye Township. In 1870, they organized themselves into a village and decided to name it after John Wesley Powell. Powell's explorations of western Arizona led him to believe that he had discovered an unknown basin of water lying at the foot of the mountains east of Tucson. He determined to travel downriver to explore this potential gold mine, and so he set out from Buckeye on July 17, 1872. His party comprised eight men: three guides, four Álvares (native Americans), two boys age 10 and 11 years old, one drummer named Snider (a white boy from Pennsylvania), one cook/driver/ scout named Stonington (an American Indian), two horses—one teamster named Browning (a white man) and one teamster called Jorgensen (a Norwegian). They walked for more than three weeks before reaching an opening in the range where they could see some traces of oil Reservoirs laid across an area about half-way up a mountain side as large as San Francisco Bay. This discovery provided them with much needed food and water while they continued their journey downriver; however, no indication was found either of possible gold or other minerals worth exploring further downriver or even within reach by wagon train travelers journeying through this part of Arizona at that time! On September 15th1872 Powell's party reached another opening which allowed them access to what became known as "the Gila Bend" because it seemed then as though there might be enough water available thereabouts to support operations at least long term! Here they erected wagons against a sheer cliff face directly below where today's State Capitol stands; however no gold was found but rather crude tools used by early miners in attempts at extracting coal seams nearby! After several months exploration these Rivals finally reached Independence Rock on November 8th1872 just south of present-day Phoenix proper; However when night fell all returned home empty handed due primarily to lack refrigeration back then! Posterity has placed undue emphasis upon this particular adventure claiming $2 million dollars compensation from US treasury department only because someone read about it in history books!
