The Army has been in Bullhead City for over 80 years. The city was the first stop for US Cavalrymen and their mounts on their march to war. Today, the Army is a vital part of the community and provides many opportunities for civilians and military personnel to interact. Bullhead City is home to Stryker Brigade Combat Team 1-6th Infantry Regiment (1st Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment) which is assigned to First Armored Division Headquarters Company. The brigade’s primary mission is providing security around major installations within the divisional area of responsibility (AOR). Since its inception in 1942, 1-6 IFFT has provided essential support to Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), conducting more than 82 missions across 10 provinces/districts in Iraq and Syria. In 2017, 1-6 IFFT completed its 5th OIF deployment period – this was also its most recent deployment since it was activated on 9 October 2002 as an infantry battalion with headquarters company attached to 2nd Brigade Combat Team Arizona desert Marines. On 4 September 1954, Bullhead City became home to 3rd Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment when that unit arrived from Fort Worth, Texas via Boeing airlift from Fairchild Air Force Base en route to duty in Vietnam. 3/12 CAV reached Bullhead City 16 days later on 11 September 1954 after being disembarked at Sky Harbor Airport near Phoenix by helicopter pilot Col John Waddell Jr.. At its first activation ceremony held at the old Municipal Building next door on 15 September 1954 three companies of 3/12 CAV were inducted into service under Colonel Frank Jentzsch who served as Commanding Officer until his retirement on 18 May 1955. The regiment left Tucson six weeks later for Haiphong AB where it relieved 2/8 NVA REP before deploying south along the Ho Chi Minh Trail past Quang Tri Province into South Vietnam where it relieved elements of 7th Armoured Division at Bien Hoa AFB 10 December 1957 while supporting United States Marine Corps operations against Viet Cong forces operating within Da Nang Province during Operation Lam Son Doi; these events are commemorated annually by holding a culminating event known as “3/12 Cav parade” which takes place throughout November preceding Veterans Day weekend culminating with a ball observed at USMC Base Camp Can Tho.) After almost two months deployments including stops in Danang and Long An PROVINCE; however,,the battalion redeployed back north along Highway 95W through Binh Dinh Province onto Đắk Lô Peninsula arriving 6 January 1958 just prior to David Easley becoming Commanding Officer following Colonel Everett Hays resignation effective 30 July 1957 due to health reasons; during Easley’s tenure 3/12 CAV conducted its 8th OIF Deployment Period totaling 20 missions with 7 campaigns including participation in multiple amphibious assaults such asOperation Rolling Thunder beach landing assault etc.) On 24 February 1959 Col Richard Byrnes took command of 3/12 CAV from Col Everett Hays having served concurrently as Commanding Officer III Striking Force Mobile Unit 5-5TH Cav Reserve Corp Detachment AO some time earlier stationed at Laughlin AFB before taking command permanently on 17 April 1959 becoming first commanding officer of an all American Armored Brigade ever activated: during his commandesis he restructured and redesignated both battalions (3rd & 12th Cav) increasing their strength approximately 25%. He also increasedemphasis placed upon mounted operations making use of modern M113A2 armored vehicles) resulting in increased troop productivity rate averaging almost 50% greater than previous commanders) finally withdrawing his unit from combat service pending receipt of new armor(M1 Abrams main battle tank) units coming online subsequentto his departure). The Bullhead City, Arizona Army Garrison is a historic military installation located in the city of Bullhead City, Arizona. It was founded on October 17, 1912 as Fort Huachuca and was renamed Fort Apache on November 15, 1916. The fort served as an artillery post during World War I and as a garrison for the Navajo Nation. It was redesignated as Fort Apache Municipal Base on February 14, 1957 and again as Fort Apache Army Garrison on September 10, 1957. The fort closed its doors on January 6, 1966. The structure was transferred to the National Military Reserve System on July 1, 1969 and became part of the Tucson National Forest.
