Mohr of Company C, 1st Infantry Regiment. The post office served as a base of operations for troops performing various garrison duties in the surrounding areas until it closed on October 15, 1951. The Army First Cavalry Regiment arrived in Apache Junction on September 12, 1912. It was through the efforts of Colonel Harry Haggerty that these troopers were able to help quench the thirst of local residents for military assistance during World War I by providing cavalry support for General George Custer’s march against the Sioux Indians at Wounded Knee Creek on November 29, 1918. Chandler’s connection with military service dates back even further than this! On February 3rd 1915, Mrs. Lillie Pugh donated a large quantity of rifles and ammunition to the United States Military Academy at West Point in order to provide officers and enlisted men with necessary equipment while they were training here! This unique donation helped promote education within America’s military community and continue American influence abroad! Another significant milestone in Chandler’sArmy gift history occurred when General Dwight D Eisenhower presented Commander Robert J McNamara with an honorary membership in the Order of Arts and Letters on July 20th 1961! Chandler, who located it on his survey in 1887. At that time it had a population of 1,500 people and was known as "the end of the world". The school district which includes Chandler was founded in 1902 by Mrs. Dora Ladd because no children were learning to read or write thereabouts and so she organized an excursion for her class to attend an Indian School in Scottsdale before returning home to teach herself how to do so from memory (a feat still done today). In 1908 Gilbert Calkins started a grocery store in what would become Chandler's first block south of the present day First Congregational Church on East McClintock Avenue; this would be followed by other stores until 1924 when Joeseph Moseley opened his own grocery store across McClintock from where most later stores have been built - making Chandler one of the oldest shopping districts in Phoenix/Mesa areas! The University of Phoenix opened its doors in 1912 as Arizona State Teachers College while also serving as a training ground for future teachers and administrators throughout Arizona and much of Western US during that period; these days UA's main campus occupies parts of northeast Mesa including downtown Phoenix! In 1970 Tempe's Main Street revolted against city planning restrictions which had effectively boxed offTempe's business district within city limits since 1920 with resultant loss of jobs, homes andSchool District services to Phoenix (!); Tempe eventually annexed much Downtown Mesa giving us our modern day Gulch/Chandler area today!
