The Cottonwood Coast Guard Station was established in 1917. The station is the oldest coast guard station in Arizona and has been providing security for the community since then. The Coast Guard Station's main mission is to protect the coastline and its residents from harmful weather conditions, accidents, and threats such as smuggling. In addition to their primary duties, the Coast Guard Station provides a variety of services to the community, including educational opportunities for local students, emergency response services, law enforcement, and more. The history of the Cottonwood Coast Guard Station can be traced back to 1917 when three men from Cottonwood decided to set up a coast guard station in order to help keep people safe on the coastline. Originally called "Cottonwood Beach Light," the name changed due to fear that other towns would take advantage of its location and establish their own coast guard stations. After some time, it was decided that a separate station would be established in order to provide better service to all potential customers. The name given at this point was "Coast Guard Station Cottonwood." In 1951, when Tucson became an incorporated city, it required that all municipal agencies have their own police department. As a result of this change in policy, the Coast Guard Station received an assignment from Tucson Police Department in order to provide protection for both residents and businesses within downtown Tucson. This continued until 1978 when responsibility for law enforcement within Tucson shifted from City Hall unto Municipal Court (now DPS). Since inception there have been many changes made at Cottonwood Coast Guard Station; however one common thread across all these changes has been dedication towards providing quality service TO THE COMMUNITY! Along with this focus has come continuous growth - from humble beginnings serving only six officers during World War II through present day where we operate over 180 personnel!
