Douglas, Arizona is a small town in Pima County, Arizona. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tucson metropolitan area. Douglas is located on the central portion of Pima County and is bordered by Bisbee to the east and south, Phoenix to the west, Tempe to the north, and Yuma to the northwest. The name Douglas comes from George A. Douglas who settled there in 1875. The post office was established in 1889 and operated until 1912. The community began as a single-family outpost on a rancho near present-day State Route 66 and Indian School Road. In 1925, developer Jules Kincaid subdivided land for development into parcels totaling . He named one block - "Douglas Place" - after his old friend Gail McDermott Dodge of Prescott Valley (now Prescott). In 1930s oil exploration discovered an oil well beneath Douglas; production began in 1938 but ceased due to lack of water supplies needed for drilling rigs during dry summers. The wells were abandoned until they were refurbished in 1984 when they became active again as part of Apacheland Oil & Gas Company's legacy field program that also included discovery of other large gas reservoirs below Douglas Reserve

Douglas was founded in 1912 by John Douglas, a cattle rancher. The town was named for John Douglas' brother-in-law, Douglas Ewing. In 1928, the townsite of Apache Junction was annexed to Douglas and it remains its municipal center today. In 1938, the Arizona Legislature changed the name of the county to Dougherty County. In 1951, Dougherty County merged with Pima County to form Pinal County. In 1988, Pinal County became Maricopa County and in 2002, it merged with Yuma County to form Arizona State University'sPhoenix campus area. Phoenix is now one of the most populous metropolitan areas in the United States with over two million residents. The history of Douglas begins with a man named John Douglas who ranched his wayward cattle across central Arizona from Welborn on the east side of buffalo country to Tuba City on the west side. When he died in 1912 at age 54 years old, his son John A.Douglas took up ranching and started what would become one of Arizona's most successful livestock operations. By 1917 there were five herds totaling 2,000 head of cattle and 500 hogs operating out of Prescott alone; by 1923 this had increased to 10 herds totaling 100 head each and 1,000 hogs spread over six ranches located throughout central and southern Arizona; by 1927 these operations totaled more than 400 head grazing 4 miles wide around Prescott on rolling hills that stretched all the way to Scottsdale on an open range 8 miles long (19 kilometers). John A.'s grandson TomDougherty continued this success story until his death in 1984 at age 91 years old; during his tenure as CEO/President (1964-1984), production increased from 1 million pounds per year when he took office to 3 million pounds per year within 5 years due largely to technological advancements including advanced feed systems that minimized losses due lack or bad pasture land etc.;TomDougherty also modernized company culture which included such innovations as creating a human resources department that recruited top talent locally instead purely through job ads placed in local newspapers...his legacy continues today as oneofthe largest privately held companiesinArizonaandoneofthelargest agribusinessesinAmericawitha Operationsareaofover50millionacres(estimated current size)andemployees numbering30to40 thousand
