From ashore there were also numerous donations made such as soap boxes filled with food rations for troops stationed overseas or classic cars donated for use by local police departments across America while troops were deployed elsewhere. Douglas, Arizona is a city in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 9,865 at the 2010 census. Douglas is located on the eastern edge of the Phoenix metropolitan area and is part of the Phoenix–Mesa–Scottsdale Combined Statistical Area. The name Douglas first appeared on maps in 1867 when James Douglas founded the town site near present-day Scotts Valley. In 1881, John Wesley Powell directed his explorations through what is now Pima County and named many small villages after himself including Butte Creek and Glenwood Springs (now Fountain Hills). On July 6, 1887, he named what are now Douglas and Mesa counties after his friend Rear Admiral Lewis A. Fenton who had been with him on most of his exploring trips during that period. On February 15, 1912, Douglas was incorporated as a city by an act of Congress under the name "Phoenix." The incorporation originated from efforts to promote irrigation in central Phoenix and to attract farming industry toDouglas because it would be cheaper for farmers to move their land into irrigated areas than into unirrigated areas around other cities such as Tucson or Alhambra. By 1920s Douglas had become one of Arizona's leading agricultural centers with over 120 breweries operating in various stages of development; however its heyday came later in the decade when air travel became available to more people and production moved out of state into nearer urban areas
Douglas was founded in 1881 and named for General James Douglas, who fought in the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. The town grew slowly until it became a thriving community with a population of around 1,000 people by 1910. Douglas began to experience growth spurt during World War I as the war moved closer to home and then slowed down in the 1920s as the economy stabilized. In 1940, the town had increased its population to 6,000 people and continued to grow through the years until it reached its current size of over 20,000 people.
