El Mirage coffee history dates back to the early 1800s when Italian immigrants started growing coffee in the area. The first roastery was built on 1st Street, east of US- 181, in 1854. In 1865, a second roastery was opened on Third Street, east of US- 191. By 1900, El Mirage had two coffeehouses and three cafeterias. The first commercial grocery store in El Mirage was founded in 1916 by Fenton Matson and his wife Lillie Matson. They sold groceries and coffee from their home on First Street between Warner Boulevard and Second Avenue. In 1928, they moved to Fourth Street between Warner Boulevard and Interstate 85 so that they could sell groceries inside the shopping center known as the Grand Central Mall. The Masons retired from grocering in 1957 but continue to support local businesses through their alma mater – Arizona State University (ASU). In recent years, they have donated money towards ASU students' scholarships.
El Mirage is a small town in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The El Mirage post office was established on March 15, 1912. It closed on December 31, 1959. El Mirage first became known as "the Junction" because it was the junction of two routes which led to Prescott and Tucson. In 1922, a new post office called "Pinecrest" was opened in nearby Paradise Valley and served the community until 1951 when it closed due to low mail volume. In 1957, the El Mirage shopping center opened on Utopia Drive east of Indian School Road (now Loop 101). This mall contained a movie theater, grocery store/delivery service, bank/credit union and several restaurants and cafes including Subway North America and Olive Garden Italian Restaurant. The mall also had an amusement park with seven rides including an Ferris wheel and six water booths for children aged three to twelve years old. In 1990s-2000s there were plans for redevelopment of what is now El Mirage Municipal Airport into one large complex that would house over 100 businesses with land area totaling . However these plans never came to fruition as there were too many obstacles from developers while still trying to get city approval for their projects; instead they built smaller buildings scattered throughout various parts of town such as south end near I-10 exit 217A or north end near Loop 101 interchange off I-10 just outside City limits

El Mirage, Arizona is the county seat of Yuma County and a census-designated place (CDP) in southern Arizona. As of the 2010 census, the population was 8,527. The El Mirage CDP is adjacent to the City of Phoenix on its eastern side and to Scottsdale on its western side. The community began as a small mining camp in 1875 when prospectors discovered rich uranium deposits in what is now known as Yuma County. The first post office opened in 1876, but it was closed by 1880 because of lack of postal service. A new post office was established at El Mirage in 1903, and it remained open until 1969. In 1912 developer Hiram Withers founded Phoenix's initial aluminum smelter at Flagstaff; production started that year and continued until 1957. In 1954 Withers sold his interest in the plant to United States Aluminum Corporation for $15 million dollars ($ today). As part of United States Steel Corporation's agreement with Pima County in 1951, El Mirage became home to US Steel's second largest refinery (the first being Garysburg). The plant produced gasoline and other petroleum products from 1953 through 1978; it ceased operations after 78 years due to environmental concerns. The refinery reopened as an electricity producer in 1984 following deregulation of energy marketsplaces within the United States. It still produces electricity today under a different name: American Transmission Company Incorporated

The city's growth continued through World War II as the war economy focused on ammunition production. After the war, El Mirage experienced rapid growth as a bedroom community for Phoenix. However, during the 1960s and 1970s, El Mirage suffered from an economic decline that involved suburbanization and loss of jobs in downtown. In recent years, El Mirage has seen renewed development with new businesses coming to town and renovated buildings being built.
