In 1962, when Pima County split into three parts, El Mirage became part of the new Phoenix metropolitan area and therefore lost its status as a town. However, it has continued to be an important local center since then because of its proximity to both Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and nearby Medical Districts such as Phoenix Central University and Glendale Community College.

El Mirage, Arizona is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 4,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1912 by Spanish-Americans who had come to the area from Tucson and other areas of what is now Arizona. The name comes from an Apache word meaning "place where there are no rivers". The first post office in El Mirage opened on December 13, 1912. The first residents were Mexican-American families who began arriving in 1912 and soon after built their own homes. By 1916 all of the Mexican-American residents had left for various reasons - generally because they could not get work or because they wanted to avoid discrimination at local businesses. In 1924 El Mirage became a part of Pinal County and since then has been its largest city with over 100,000 people living there as well as 1 million visitors each year."
The town of El Mirage was founded in 1911 by Harry H. Smith, a rancher and surveyor. The town name is derived from the Spanish word "elmiri," meaning "the mirage." In 1912, the first post office in the community was established. The town grew rapidly and by 1916 had a population of 50 people. By 1920, El Mirage had a population of 300 people and became an incorporated municipality. In 1933, the United States Signal Corp.established a wireless telegraph station operating out of El Mirage. This station was used to send messages between American military forces overseas and their support missions in Mesopotamia during World War II. In 1941, when Arizona entered World War II, El Mirage became one of three locations in Arizona selected to establish military radio transmitters for use by Army Air Forces units conducting aerial bombing operations over enemy territory. In 1948, the El Mirage Municipal Building was built as part of the city's municipal infrastructure development program. As part of this program, $5,000 were allocated to improve public transportation within the city limits and $10,000 were also set aside for planning and design work on new civic buildings including a library/Museum complex and an amphitheater/recreational center overlooking Glendale Lake which would become home to America's first soccer team (Glendale United) after they were acquired by Phoenix Soccer Club in 1949). Construction began on these projects in 1949 but due to funding shortages they were not completed until 1951-1952; however both complexes opened as planned on October 25th 1952 El Mirage experienced rapid growth during its early years with population increases averaging around 100 per year; however this Growth stopped abruptly following what is known as The Great Depression which struck Arizona hard particularly among small businesses experiencing difficult times caused by changes in currency values throughout 1931-1932 & ensuing stock market crash that led directly to layoffs at many local companies that couldn't source needed goods or services because there wasn't enough money available to purchase them without selling assets rather than liquidating them
