The town began as a post office in 1907, and became part ofMohave County when it was created from parts of Apache and Pima counties on February 14, 1912. The name means "the Mirage" in Spanish and referred to the area's beauty even though it consisted mostly of sand dunes that stretched for miles across the desert floor. In 1957, most of El Mirage split off to form Phoenix Mesa while remaining part of Mohave County until its annexation by Phoenix on October 1, 1998. On November 3rd, 2002 voters passed a measure annexing all unincorporated areas east of Interstate 10 within Mohave County into Phoenix Mesa making El Mirage an enclave once again with no vote or input from residents

El Mirage is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona, located about 20 miles northeast of Phoenix. The population was 5,780 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first post office in El Mirage was established on November 15, 1907. The name changed to its current form on January 1, 1912. El Mirage has a rich history that starts with its location and early settlers. In 1898, James Cavanaugh set up shop in what is now El Mirage as a truck stop and general store. His business flourished and he soon began to import goods from Canada and other parts of the United States. By 1902, James had built a house on what is now East Indian School Road which he called "Cavanaugh's Ranch". He served as mayor of the town from 1905 to 1909 and again from 1913 to 1917; during his terms both men were known for their public service work in town. In 1915 Donny Schaeffer opened a grocery store in what is now West Indian School Road which became one of the largest grocery stores in Arizona at that time. In 1923 Donny also founded an agricultural dealership named "Donny's Green Acres". Over time many more businesses were started along with homes being built for many of these entrepreneurs including: Harry Hirsch (1927), Clyde Kapp (1929), Milton Sperling (1931), Averill Wechtel (1935), Homer Wiegand (1945) and Norma Dietrich (1965). It wasn't until after World War II that growth returned to El Mirage until it reached its peak around 1960 when it had 10,000 residents according to the 2000 census estimates however by 2030 rural employment had plummeted by 50%. By then all but two businesses closed down or went out of business while only four homes remained standing contributing significantly towards El Mirage's dwindling commercial district over time especially given that there are no paved roads within reach for most inhabitants making day-to-day commerce difficult if not impossible unless one happened upon an old abandoned building or farmstead lying derelict within view; these days few if any people even know about or visit this once vibrant community remnant today let alone enjoy its unique architecture or culture much less partake in its local agricultural production gone largely unnoticed except perhaps among some rare visitors who stumble upon it while randomly driving through central Phoenix looking for something else entirely
